Assalam O Alaikum
E-Number 471 is a Mono-and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids. This fat based emulsifier can be made from either pork fat or Non-Zabiha beef fat or Zabiha beef fat or from soybean fat. If it is made from Soybean fat or Zabiha beef fat then it becomes Halal ingredient but if it is made from pork fat then it becomes Haram and some Ulema also considered it Haram if it is made from Non Zabiha beef fat. It is not necessory that it is always made from pork fat.
There are three way to find out its source:
1. If there is Halal or Kosher symbol appear on the package of a food product containing E-Number 471 under the ingredients list. It means that it is made from soybean fat.
2. If there is a statement " Suitable for vegetarian" appear on the package of a food product containing E-Number 471 in the ingredients list. Again it means that the E-Number 471 is made from soybean fat.
3. Inquiry with manufacturer of the food product about source of E-Number 471.
You have to make sure that the other ingredients in the product are from Halal sources.
We have do not have E-Number syetem in USA, the 4th way is the word "Vegetable" appear before Mono-and Diglycerides like Vegetable Mono-and Diglycerides.
It is very good thing that you are avoiding the doubtful food products since long time. You have a very good Taqwa. Every Muslim has to do the same thing if some one is not sure about its Halal status.
