One point to add is with regard to choosing your branch. If you are only planning to be in the army for a few years before leaving to persue a civilian career, then signals or logistics branch is best because you will learn skills that you can transfer easiliy to the civilian job market. However if you intend to persue the army as a long term career then you would be better of with a combat arm (infantry, armour or artillery) as the majority of high ranking officers (one star and up) tend to be from combat arms. I'm not saying its impossible to achieve high rank from non-combat arms, just that it is more difficult. Just something to bear in mind if you are given your choice of assignments.
