You can lay down with him until he is completely asleep, then carry him to his crib and keep a soft pillow close to him so he feels protected. If he wakes up at night, gently stroke his head. He may still cry but don't lift him. Let him fall asleep on his own. It will be painful but eventually he will get into the habit to finding another source of comfort.
