Contingency in mindset from a religious perspective is thus:
What has happened 'should' not have happened is blasphemy because we believe that whatever happens has happened by the Will of God.
To therefore become overly cursory of what has happened is not the style of a believing Muslim.
Superstitions are often conformant to such mindsets. That if you do such and such ... such and such will happen.
From Islam again we know that this worldly life is a deceptive one. In that we believe the effect is caused by what we attribute the cause to be. However, we know that or rather should believe that God has dominion over all things. Entertaining the ability to walk on water would be possible if we have enough purity in faith to ask God to facilitate that.
Then there are decision that have to be made and there are decisions that needn't be made.
The Prophet(SAW) said:
"I am leaving you two things and you will never go astray as long as you cling to them -- they are the Book of Allah and my Sunnah." [Reported by Al- Haakim - Sahih].
