- He has a CD which he can read with any other CD-ROM but not with his notebook's (actually his laptop has a DVD-Drive)
- He can read other CDs with his notebook's CD-ROM drive.


So now that leaves us with these options (for OS installation):

- Either change the CD-ROM drive of the notebook
- use an external CD-ROM, which is most probably a USB one. And hope that BIOS settings allow you to boot from USB drives.
- Try different CDs unless one lets the notebook boot
