I'd recommend 2-3 days .. when I used to take family around SF, it was usually for the day and it was all so rush rush ... but we used to manage 
I personally don't like being rushed.
As for LA .... how many days have you got? and then plan according to that? You will find plenty to do if your worried about that. And if your worried you may not have enough days, then plan it so that you see the sights you want to most first ... |
i've got about 3-4 days in LA and in SF so i think i've got enough time , i just want to be able to use them fruitfully !
