This happened a long time ago....just shows you how long this so called snobbery has been going on for:
I was shopping with my Nanni in London. The retailer was a Punjabi man, so my Nanni, to establish rapport, began conversing with him in Punjabi also. Anyway the conversation was flowing..... we purchased our items and we were just about to leave the shop, until this woman (must've been around my mom's age) stopped my Nanni and said in Urdu:
"You should be ashamed of yourself, speaking in Punjabi in front of your young impressionable granddaughter...."
I (then a feisty teenager) was getting ready to fire back at her.... "don't you know who my Nanni is bla bla bla".... until we walked away from her, only a couple of yards.... and she returned to her own daughter, only to carry on her conversation.... IN PUNJABI!!!!!!
"Look at yourself before faulting others"
