I have come across so many people, old and young, desi and non-desi, who seem to forget their "aukaat." I don't know what the exact translation of this word is in English however the urdu word's definiton is pretty thorough and all-encompassing. There are people who are super-non-glam but act like there is no one as superior as them in looks. Likewise, there are people who feel that just because they have some $ (ex. say a few million), everyone should start worshipping the ground they walk on. I have heard it said many times: "sab ko apni aukaat mein rehna chahiye." So true! Is so one afraid of God anymore?

"aukaat" is very much subjective... someones aukaat might not be the same what you think it is...

what is wrong with thinking you are superior than others as long as you arent hurting people physically or emotionally? We all have a right to feel beautiful and feel good about us. As Chachoo mentioned above, your defintion of aukaat can be different than others. If you dont find someone glamorous enough for you, doesnt mean everyone else holds the same opinion. I say, let them be happy

i quite frankly dont like the word "aukat" and i HATE it even more when smenoe is told to "apni aukat mein raho" .. cus as humans we have no right to tell one another whats ones aukat..

but yeah ur right, one should stay within limits.. but these limits should be the same for everyone

Aoqaat is plural of waqt - time. Like London Times. Aoqaat e landan.

    Aoqaat also means Haisiyat, Basaa'at.

    ^I agree
Aukaat is such a negative word (to me). So what if someone wants to 'act' above their aukaat, isn't that a good thing? Try and aim for the 'best'
Who decides what aukaat you have anywayz?

well i think ppl as a general rule for living in a sane society MUST remain within their 'auqat' which means, in this context, being always able to remember that they are NOT largerr than life and are NOT superior to anyone else in any way just because thay have a littlie bit more of smthng that many others dont, and should always remember that they are in the end mortal humans who are the servants of GOD ALMIGHTY who is the real and only One who is superior to ALL else there is. humans should always remain within their "auqat" or "haiysiyat" and remember that one day all their pomp and show will turn to dust. there is this beutiful verse in urdu, i cant remeber it in detail and cant remember the name of thee poet, but he is a famous poet maybe Nazeer AkbarAbaadi:

"Sab thaat para reh jaawe ga
    jab laad chale ga banjaara"

    meaning:
"all grandeur will be left behind
when the gypsy walks away carrying his load"

so thinking too much of ones self for being in posession of material or worldy 'wealth' in any form be it money, looks, children, land, fame, authority, power, position whatever, is against the teachings of Islam and moderacy. Islam has forbiddedn humans to even walk with pride and promotes equality, sharing of welath and understanding among all.
and as the old saying in Urdu goes: "ghuroor ka sar neecha" so perhaps those who take to much pride and consider their selves above everyone else do learn a lesson in the end...and, according to Allah, the best human is not the one with the most or best posessions, but the one who is the best in Iman, Moderacy, performing all duties well, and is good to all his fellow mortals.

and, the context in which some of the above posters have taken 'auqat' to be, although i think that wasnt what was to be discvussed here, i think we all do have right to hold ourselves in high regard, we have to have a good ego, self respect and must be confident, but, if it ever gets out of hand and starts belittling others less fortunate, thats where the problem begins and it gets out of hand. as no one else has a right to belittle us cause we are the BEST! we ourselves too must remember that we have no right to belittle others, who are equally BEST. humans cant understand the equality equations planned by Allah. He, fter all has said that all humans are equal.

IMO aim for the highest, you *are* capable of it

be the most beautiful, be the smartest, the richest, the happiest

but you must *also* be the nicest, the most giving, the most caring person that other people need

dont think you are higher than others, in your opinion you might have more in material wealth or even in contacts or relationships, but that doesnt give you the right to think of yourself as better than everyone, bcos once you start thinking that way, your probably going to come across a thousand others who are much much better than you
