"He looked around at the faces of the men who worked at the docks, faces like anvils, hardened by the constant hammering life had given them. Usually it was porter or stout that erased the cares from those faces. Pint after pint. Washing away the bellowing foreman, the sad-eyed wife, the underfed children, the constant, aching knowledge that no matter how hard you worked, you'd only ever be a docker and there'd never be enough - enough coal in the bin, enough meat on the table. But tonight something else had lit up these faces - hope."
This excerpt is from The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly. I was just reading it right now and it got me thinking, but god i dont know what im thinking, just that im so glad that ive never been piss poor or had to deal with those difficulties like my dad had with six children and a father who was a mere clerk. how do people survive??? what keeps them going??? i feel like it would need so much strength

precisely why one should be thankful to God for everything they have... God loves the appreciative. In fact, God in his infinite lack of ego Himself appreciates when we are appreciative. How humbling is that?

this can never make anyone keep going....
what keeps a man going is "qanaa'at" or being satisfied with what u have....
when u earn just very little.... not enough even to feed yourself properly.... and go to bed thanking God for what HE chose to give you.... opnly then can u keep going....
otheriwse its all just a wild goose chase....
Both Halal & Haram r evident but between them r doubtful things, most ppl have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from suspicious things saves his religion & honor, & whoever indulges in suspicious things indulges in Haram.

I suppose a lot comes from what type of person you are, some are full no matter how empty others perceive their lives to be.
There was and is a time for hard work and a hard life, hard men and hard women rose and rise up to meet the challenge, many have hard hearts as a consequence, but those that don't, they inspire the rest of us.
