It's as jaanaan says...because Adam was (supposedly) the first human, and in theory a person would know him better than anyone else.

It is because all man was made in the image of one and Adam just so happend to be the first man created so in theroy all man should look the same hence which one would be Adam if they all looked the same would you know your partener from adam?
