Everyone has a particular method or way of revising /studying.
Some prefer skimming the text and believe in repeated readings others go for the "pakistani method of rataaa laganaa and can be seen swinging over their books learning each sentence , page number and paragraph by heart.
Yet others make notes or bulletin points.
For me its always been skimming the text and I believe each time you read you retain a bit , something like peripheral perception.
I also highly believe in writing , reading and hearing approach.....where the more senses I apply the more I retain the information that I read !
How do you study and what do u find is the most effective way ?

I have heard that you have to be exposed to the material at last 3 times before you can retain it.Long term memory I mean.
And Sheynieee.. This Thread seems like C&A material

nice thread..
i read thru ..skimming through the text rather ..at times i make little notes on stick-ons and add them on the book ..that way revision helps ..
at other times, i read out aloud ..to keep myself distracted ..and when nothin works .. i think serious group study sessions are a lifesaver ..
i wish i was a ratta person ive never been able to rattofy things ..and in med skool..there is ALOT of memorising..so stupid mnemonics ...references to songs, movies..they do help me learn lol
and since im new to GS..am alarmed at the way it is addictive ..esp for talktative opinionatd ppl like me ... i have my ENT (Ear,nose & throat) sendup on monday ..and i cant help goin thru various threads n replying after every 10 mins or so ..lol
is that normal ???

I take notes and try to apply that to real world situations.
Sheyn, I'm the finance industry so most of the securities exams end up being practical. But there are still some that test theory. In those instance, I take many notes and connect them to the real world.
Also, please make sure that you're not too tired, have had something to eat/drink and take breaks to really absorb the knowledge.
I have an exam coming at the end of November, and I need to start studying *like right now*

If the books is closely related to the topic I already know. I go through it quickly marking new things with led pencil.
If its extremely conceptual then I read it in small bits. Some time stop in the middle and research related material.
One book I wanted to read but after 2 chapters I had to put down. And I had to read 2 books before I could understand the first one.
I used to read in front of TV alot. I turn the volume down and read. Tricking my self into thinking its TV time.
Talk about "mind games"
In park when no one is around. River bank. etc etc
playStation: I write things like "what the F" "what the hell" "www"(means I have to look into it more on web) stuff like that.

since i'm done with my studies, i can tell you whjat i used to do. again, i took short cut to my entire education so i did the same thing when it came to studying...an effective way for me was to read a chapter and then quiz myself many times over until i knew my stuff. i was successful every time. thanks to Allah

Started from the Index and Preface of the Book , so to get "bird view" of the book.
Found how deep is the author, if needed more attention ,
Made notes of it.
Group study is the ever best way of studying , but if some one donot have others to participate with, then is writting
Writting for what I read
plus
what is the summary and main points of my study.
Reorganizing of the matterial if was possible especially the theoritical books.
What is the topic (Defined it in my own words)
Where to see the points , categories , causes and effects etc.
My studies were Mathematical type mostly , so depended very less on Memorising.
Which today I feel I am weak in Memorizing things comparitively.

I highlight as I read, use colored pens and color-code my notes. Then make tables, mneumonics and stuff to remember, and lastly do questions. Then read explanations and write down the ones I got wrong.
Usually works. We'll see if its still working next week =)

might have something to do with not having GS at hand

^ definitely, lol.
I make notes.. read over them out loud and make sure key things like dates (the joys of history ) and definitions stick in my head.
I read aswell but that on its own never usually helps.. I normally have to keep writing up summaries for every section or whatever.
Practise essay questions.. this is always useful.
AND I have to make sure I'm far away from my laptop as possible

I can't ratta no matter how much I try, no wonder I was kicked out of the medical college
I hv 2 understand the concept, if I can't grasp the basic fundamentals of any topic I can't move forward but once I get the hang of it then it's a smooth sailing going forward. However my recent exams mostly were related 2 my field so didn't needed much study

In confinement, and usually during late evening/night.
Method: (Go ahead, copy it, i let you!)
Skim, take notes, review notes, skim text again. No highlighter please!!!
I think when you write down what you're reading, it is reinforced and you are more likely to remember it. Well it's been that way for me anyways.

a thorough study once only near the exams would do. the rest i always tried absorbing in class. and it did work most of the times. for me it was never rattafication. but then again i was at a loss b/e i had problems with subjects like chemistry.
at this level my method is still the same . but i absorb alot. i usually remember page numbers or specific words only by looking at them which really helps
