I need to find proof that someone is married (I know they are). Is it possible for me to search for, and get a copy of, their official records? e.g. nikah nama or birth certs of their kids.
    Who would have it? NADRA?

This is a very crucial matter and several people's futures depend on it. All help is appreciated.

    Only serious comments please!

I believe NADRA is keep maintaining public records of citizen.

You can go to any county and request registration certificate by showing one of the NIC of birde/groom.

Nadra most probably will have a marriage record. From the little that I know, most Pakistani's wanting to move abroad have to get their nikkah nama's verified (like educational degrees from Pak embassy) from Nadra to help them get through immigration.

If you want numbers on who to contact or if you think there's anything I could do, feel free.

This marriage happened 14 years ago (around 1997-98 or so). Would NADRA have records of prior events?
Yes I would love to get some contacts & numbers. The person who moved abroad didn't use his Nikahnama for his moving abroad records. So testification would be a moot point.

even if marriage was not registered with NADRA, and local imam documented those record and produced nikkah nama at the time of nikkah, it is still valid marriage.

Nadra wasn't really present at the time and hence I'm not sure if they would have any records that could help. I don't really know what to say. Maybe get the location or name of the Masjid or Imam could probably help? I'm in Karachi by the way.

    In Pakistan, contact:
1- DRO (District Registration Office) or DPO (District Population Office)
2- Notary Office within his/her district or tehsil where a copy of same Nikah Nama are kept

Quicker way if the person applied computerized National Identity Card then at column #4 the person provided spouse's name alongwith National Identity number which means that person is married. So you can obtain CRC (Computerized Registration Certificate) by requesting NADRA's repsentative through Pakistan embassy/consulate or by directly communicated with NADRA from their official website www.nadra.gov.pk.

Another way if the person have computerized passprt then by presenting his passport number or the citizenship number (same number mentioned on his/her National Identity Card too) at embassy/consulate to obtain a hard copy of details i.e. parent's name, spouse's name, adress in Pakistan etc.,

Hope the above info will be helpful. If not than I say contact LKK as he's good in this (saw his thread about document attestion etc.)

finding records from the Nikah registrar (molvi) is like digging out something from the graveyard. I have seen some molvi even don't know how to write in urdu so do you think he could remember a nikah held some 14 years ago?

    Bad advice

The guy was married in Lahore. I'm sure i can track the local mosque but I'm not there. He was married there and then proceeded to marry another girl in Canada. So now I'm looking for proof.

Thats correct, there are designated Nikah Registrars, which are usually local Imams who maintain a register. They can get you a copy of Nikkah, but if you are trying over the internet, will be very difficult. Some one needs to go in person to them.

Call the concerned SHO of the thana in that area , he will produce a proof even if it does not exist , for right amount of rishwat. That is just an idea , if I needed it this is what I would do.

I think Nomi gave you the best answer because those two must have the records. Other places most likely will not BUT tracking the molvi or even knowing where he got married is the hard part. NADRA will most likely not have these records.

Usually There are four copies ....

You keep one . The imam , who did you nikaah keeps one for his record .. Then your Union council has one ... and The Marriage registration Authority keeps one ...

I don't know , how it works in rest of the pakistan . But that's how it works in Karachi ... So just go your Union council and they will sort it out for it ..

Expect to spend 5 to 10 k for this nixer , in form of presents / bribe
Do not judge me by my PAST , I dont live there anymore

Telling you honestly that if you want to use it as a proof then it ll be useless as European courts ll not consider it as an proof as I've already done it for one of my friend.
