Is playing the lotto really considered gambling & is it really haram? I am a bit confused. To me it's not like your cheating anyone, your just taking a chance, and you either win/lose, but its just your odds. Not like you do anything wrong to make your odds better....etc.
On the same token, going to a casino and playing just a few rounds for fun, is that really wrong. My mom has always told me how it's haram, but I never really got it, just agreed. It is one thing I am an addict, but what if I just buy say $25-50 in coins "for fun" or kicks...and play a few games. I am NOT even expecting to win, but just for fun....is that wrong??
I was thinking of a last minute trip down to Atlantic City, but if all I can do there is go to the beach/boardwalk I am better off going to Point Pleasant or Belmar or elsewhere...dunno. Hmm what do you guys think?

Yes Lotto is haram. The reason is that Islam does not encourage money that you havnt earned through hard work ... and any money that can be addictive ... if you win it once , you will keep going back to it...
What Islam supports is halal money, eg : you start a business and it starts doing really well .. that is halal money.
About your casino bit , why not jsut take a bottle of wine and have a few sips saying you are thirsty and nothing else..
No , anything that is addictive , we are told to stay away from it , because its only the first step that is the hardest to take , once you have taken that first step , nothing in this world will be able to stop you from getting deeper and deeper into it.
As a muslim , always respect what the holy book and the Sunnah teaches us ... we as muslims shouldnt be encouraging each other to play lotto or go to the casino.Rest Allah knows best.Posted Jul 1st, 2009 at 10:15 AM by Chicken Biryani

Thanks Chicken Biriyani, but I am not trying to encourage, just wondering.. What you said pretty much sums up what my ammi tells me.
I just don't see the comparison o fplaying lotta/casino with liquor or otherwise. Is investing in stocks/bonds haram as well. I have heard tha tis fine, but just don't get it, similar odds of gaining/losing money with that as well.
NJgal, Id love to go to cape may, but no casinos
no but seriously it is a little too far south, isnt that the tip of NJ.
Now with the lotto thing, it is not like you are lying or scandal or cheating anyone for money, taking your fair chance like the other millions of people. So confused. I still don't get WHY is it haram.Posted Jul 1st, 2009 at 10:26 AM by Afro-Sheen

Afro.. just a quick suggestion.. don't google an Islamic issue.. rather, find a good reputable website and search that for any thing that you are looking for.. there are way too many websites out there issuing fatwas and what not without being any alim in deen.
I say start with islamicity.com.. Q&A section, you will find pretty much everything there and of course continue looking for authentic websites instead of relying on googling. :-)Posted Jul 1st, 2009 at 11:22 AM by Gemini the Great
