about chomsky, this time its loewenstein. Antony loewenstein http://antonyloewenstein.com/blog/. A book that he wrote couple of years back My Israel Question was a very candid view of the matter which required alot of guts . one can see the propoganda against the guy on AIJAC's site but much worse is to be seen on the jihad watch and similar cyber drivel the sort that Geert Wilder will probably revel in. However all these intellectuals chomsky, loewenstein, howard zin come from jewish back grounds some of them are socially ostracised like Edward Said( christian here) was, for being the culprit of orientalism. It does bother me however when pakistanis get together about palestinian plight and Some of us are bothered by the fact that kashmir doesnot get as much attention as palestine. so if we were to show compassion for palestinians we would just be politcal fakers. However its innocent blood at the end of the day in kashmir, bosnia, palestine and else where. Palestine is precious for its very location, its middle east for heaven's sake , western media has to pay attention there and its israel for another matter. As for kashmir, every one knows sub continent is important but never has had as much air on international medium as middle east. Little matter of world power and petroleum. Does that means average arab does not care for kashmir? i think not there govts are as poor representatives of them as ours are of us. And supposing that you know all arabs are prejudice and donot give two hoots about non arab muslim, how would we be better if we were to mirror their behaviour? Pakistanis generally speaking are compassionate and that makes me happy to be a part of such nation. They donot feel threatened by caring for muslim not ethnically identical to them. That lack of ethnic pride is perhaps our most prized possession as muslims.

I think you are forgetting to appreciate the very great intellectual presence that the aforementioned writers had in their relative spheres which led then to them being taken seriously in topical matters. The key to their success imo was timing. Their generations were coming to a political and educational awakening and there was no real acknowledgement of their peoples. The ideals werent fitting and so this new path was appreciated for its radicalness and so we inherit it today.

But that is just a casulty of education. If we have enough academics in the apprepriate spheres then we too will be taken seriously.

forgive the ramble. The reason why chomsky and said are taken seriously has been bothering me for a while and thats the conclusion ive come to. also im procrastinating

i would term it causality rather than casualty.Timing is crucial fair enough, but then you can push when the time is right but you set the wheels in motion whether it is or it isnt. Why the likes of bat ye'or are taken seriously is a source of contant wodner to me.
What concerns me more is the potential of 'oreint's' thinker in itself. I donot prescribe to the view that there arent any, language for me is the biggest barrier in accessing their work.
    procrastinate some more
