Us and Them

Posted May 5th, 2009 at 11:58 PM by Croquet

Another book that i finished yesterday.i have a habit of starting two or three at the same time and depending on my little ones mood i go with one of them the quickest. Children can be distraction so you pick a page turner when they are zoned out. So anyhow, Peter Manning is the writer. Talks about muslim depiction and islamic represenation in Australian media. Those of us who arent from australia will probably not be that aware of the issue, since muslims are horrendously stereotyped in western media any how. However in Australia two generalisation go hand in hand, Lebanese are trouble, muslims are arabs. One would think australiand would be able to differentiate being in the close proximity of indonesia and malayasia( non arab muslim countries) however that is not the case (though pauline hanson would be the prime duck here).

Sydney's west is a big bad place since its full of tricky migrants. melbourne is more turkish. Two big muslim communities here turkish and lebanese, and they couldnt be more different. Turks are relatively in less trouble. Pakistan? pakistan ko kon janta hai bhai? the only thing you can hear in polite discourse is 'good cricket'. war of terror has brought us some respectable attention, i am being sarcastic here.

Anyhow back to media murder of muslims. It is quite overt now and those of you who can differentiate between implied meaning and stated will be easily able to understand. just pull out islam in australia on wikipedia and see the article. In this context, this book from an australian who has worked as a journalist , is a breath of fresh air. I found it endearing, part travel log and part commentary on foreign affairs. Definitely gives you excellent information about israel, sharon and arab world. Very very candid if only he wrote this when he was holding an influential position in media circus. Good things come with retirement it seems.

next target, sharon and my mother in law by Suad Amiry.as soon i hunt it up, i will posting. unless i die reading macbeth in which case, what a prodigious waste. if english didnt have bernard shaw they wouldnt have a hope. and if shakespeare didnt write his auspicious sonnets he would be totally insufferable. if only i could get away with writing this about the old croak in essay.
jolly!
