Ramazan a festival of foods.
I love food and snacks. My wife loves cooking and makes very awesome desi dishes and desi snacks.
Now at the iftar time if there are things like , patties ( puff pastry stuffed with qeema) , Cholay, various kinds of pakoray , fruit chaat, spring rolls, samosay and dahi baray on the table ,how can you resist and stop short of over stuffing yourself and keep some space for exotic food after the namaz a maghrib.
We live in a neighborhood where there are many other Muslim families living nearby so every other day someone will send a platter of Iftari also. That adds more variety to the iftari.
But as I said I love food , therefore I cannot resist to eat some biryani , qorma , shami kabab or nihari after salaat al maghrib.
So during ramazan the roza is not my test. My test is the food on the table which I have to resist to over eat.
I have been telling my wife to either make and serve loads of iftari or hold off the iftari and just make the food . But she comes from a family where it was customary to celebrate Ramazan this way. In her family and mine too , Ramazan used to be a festival of foods.
Now we have growing kids who love food too and my BIL and his wife are living with us this ramazan too so she cannot short change anybody on this festival of foods. She wants to be a good hostess.
We do not worry as all of us are on exercise routine. Even my teen ager does workout. I was on treadmill last night after iftar for 30 minutes and before iftaar I did a regimen of going up and down our stairs for about 15 minutes.

@Nick I have two growing boys who are always hungry so Iftari is normally gone now withing minutes , but when they were babies my wife listened to my advice and stopped making iftari , but now she has started it again. She is not a big eater herself but she loves to feed others.
@Ansoon , You are more than welcome I assure you , you will love your stay with us.Posted Sep 2nd, 2008 at 03:45 PM by Mirch

My family is staying with us (due to Hurricane Gustav's threat) since Saturday, so mom has been helping mrs. with the iftaari and my family likes to make several oily dishes for iftaari. Personally, I don't like that much variety for iftar because to me Ramadan is not about food, it's about eating less to be considerate towards those that aren't as fortunate as us. So once the family leaves, I'll probably have just fruit chaat and one dish of salan with roti, that's pretty much it.
Also, why do desis (including my family) call patties "patties"? I think the true name should be turnovers!Posted Sep 2nd, 2008 at 04:47 PM by Shikra
