Why so much pain in our life...?

A scholar once told me that a painful time in a Muslim's life is basically due to two reasons:
It is either a test from Allah to increase his degree in heaven, to wash away his sins, to reward him in near future and to bring him closer to Allah. The only deed with infinite rewards is to be patient in troubled times (hadith)
Or it might be a punishment from Allah due to his past sins for which he didn't repent, hence nature pushes him back to the path of Allah from which he had deviated.
I thought how would we know if our physical or mental pain is a test or a punishment. He said, "If he is still patiently thankful to Allah (swt) after losing money, status, job, health, relationships....etc., then he is passing through a test meant to strengthen his Imaan. Otherwise he is going through a punishment. Because tests brings along with it a divine consolation to heart (sakinah) but punishments bring along pain and restlessness to heart unless a person sincerely seeks guidance and repents for his sins with an intention of not repeating them in future."
May Allah (swt) guide us all towards the right path. Ameen!
