It is a pleasure to inform you that book titled "Bee-inspired Protocol
Engineering: from Nature to Networks"
has been finally published by
Springer-Verlag in Natural Computing series. It is a great moment for CS/EE Reseah in Pakistan because not too many researchers -- got a chance to publish a research book with the world's best publisher.




Honey bee colonies demonstrate robust adaptive efficient
agent-based communications and task allocations without centralized
controls – desirable features in network design. This book
introduces a multipath routing algorithm for packet-switched
telecommunication networks based on techniques observed in bee
colonies. The algorithm, BeeHive, is dynamic, simple, efficient,
robust and flexible, and it represents an important step towards
intelligent networks that optimally manage resources.



The author guides the reader in a survey of nature-inspired routing
protocols and communication techniques observed in insect colonies.
He then offers the design of a scalable framework for
nature-inspired routing algorithms, and he examines a practical
application using real networks of Linux routers. He also utilizes
formal techniques to analytically model the performance of
nature-inspired routing algorithms. In the last chapters of the
book, he introduces an immune-inspired security framework for
nature-inspired algorithms, and uses the wisdom of the hive for
routing in ad hoc and sensor networks. Finally, the author provides
a comprehensive bibliography to serve as a reference for
nature-inspired solutions to networking problems.



This book bridges the gap between natural computing and computer
networking. What sets this book apart from other texts on this
subject is its natural engineering approach in which the challenges
and objectives of a real-world system are identified before its
solution, nature-inspired or otherwise, is discussed. This balanced
exposition of the book makes it equally suitable for
telecommunication network designers and theorists, and computer
science researchers engaged with artificial intelligence, agents,
and nature-inspired techniques.

Our project "Remote Patient Monitoring with focus on antnatal care" (http://rpms. nexginc.org) has been shortlised as top 3 projects among 612 projecrts submitted from 102 countries. This indeed is a great moment for Pakistan and nexGIN RC. We wish the team best of luck for finals to be held from June 10-13 in Mexico.

It gives me immense pleasure to inform that -- in current desperate and negative media campaign about Pakistan -- the dedicated team of nexGIN researchers have brought a unique laurel for Pakistan: representing at one of the top security conferences -- RAID 2009 -- which wll be held this year in France. Some of you might be aware of the fact that Security research is like a close big mafia -- mostly dominated by US and European researchers -- in which it is very difficult to make inroads. Our team -- with the blessing of Allah -- has broken the ice surrounding this myth. In, RAID 2009 only 17 papers are accepted with the following distribution:

ii. Europe ---- 05 Papers
iii. Asia ------- 02 Papers

It is suprising to tell you that from Asia, both papers are from Pakistan and from Pakistan both papers are from nexGIN RC of FAST National University. It is also an honor to mention that other instiutions represented at the conference are:

Remote Patient Monitoring System ranked in top 3 worldwide


The project “Remote Patient Monitoring System” of Next Generation Intelligent Networks Research Center (nexGIN RC), National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (FAST-NUCES) marks its impact at the global level by getting among the winners of the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA). The project has been selected out of 612 submissions from 102 different countries after extremely competitive evaluation by 20 experts and social entrepreneurs during a three-stage judging process. The World Summit Youth Award for the project will be presented to the young brain of nexGIN RC, Ajay Kumar Tanwani, before the center stage of the world in Monterrey, Mexico.



The WSYA provides the global initiative to select and promote the world’s best e-content and innovative ICT applications. The contest helps to raise awareness and resolve the UN Millennium Development Goals of ending poverty, hunger, disease, empowering women, improving mother and child health, and saving the environment. The WSYA showcases the young developers and serves as a platform for people from all UN member states to work together on the efforts of reaching the Millennium Development Goals. The event brings together Ministers, policymakers, business leaders, and young content innovators in the field of information and communication technologies for development from around the world. Together they join the development community under the umbrella of the Global Alliance, enter the dialogue with focus on emerging issues and challenges in the areas of Education and Innovation, and foster cooperation among governments, private sector and civil society. For youth of Pakistan to be a part of these next generation policies is indeed a matter of pride for the whole country.




The PKR 26.9 million project is in part (PKR 14.66) funded by National ICT R&D Fund (Ministry of IT). The project is being executed by a team of researchers of “nexGIN RC FAST-NU” headed by Dr. Mudassar Farooq (http://rpms.nexginrc.org). The main collaborators of the project are: (1) Human Development Foundation (HDF) (HDF | Raising literate & healthy families, reducing poverty), and (2) Obs & Gyane department of Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) headed by Prof Dr. Asma Usmani. Recently MCH department of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) headed by Prof. Dr. Ghazala Mehmood has also joined the project team. HDF, a US based NGO, is the deployment organization that currently covers seven rural centers throughout Pakistan. Dr. Abul Aziz Awan from HDF is leading the team of field doctor and lady health workers. The medical expertise for developing the system is being provided by the senior registrar of BBH -- Dr. Sadia Khan -- and her postgraduate trainee -- Dr. Ayesha Basharat. The active collaboration of engineers and researchers with doctors, sociologists, Lady Health Workers and patients is playing a key role in making this project a true success.
