Hello, I've been working in the US since the last 14 years as an IT professional (software development) and now contemplating a move to Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Not sure if this is as attractive a proposition as it was a year ago due to global recession ?..would welcome any advice...thanks

Shocked

I think Abu Dhabi has not been affected by the Global Recssion crises , may be but very little.

ADNOC announced to invest 50 Billion Dhs for their construction/Developement works in 2009-2010 and our company engaged for water works , we receiving many invitations for Tendering as we were receiving last year.
I mean the frequency has not been changed.

IT , yes one of my friend came on visit an IT Professional from pakistan at the end of his VISIT visa he got one IT related job , but , I think for you like Experienced person , you can make your own space.

Thanks poppies, engrshami. This is going to be a life changing decision for me if I do wrap up my life here and move closer to my parents in Lahore.
Also would be great if I can get an idea on what are the salary ranges (I do understand it can vary wildly depending upon the place/experience..etc) and also if there are any genuine recruitment companies that anybody is familiar with. Thanks again for your advice.
This does seem like an interesting place. Hope to be more active in the future.

have loads of experience in recruiting around the GCC region in dubai and AD in particular....
there are some recruitment firms out there that specialise in certain sectors in the uae - I run some of them - drop me a PM and we can have a chat if youre still intrertested.
If i can assist would be happy to direct you accordingly.

in your specific area engr shami I would expect things to continue - infrastructure works etc. - our clients are still buoyant and busy - except for the likes of aldar / LoR etc....

but in the build and refurb area things are dire, none of our clients are recruiting and there are some fantatstically skilled people available , those who have been made redundant.....- AD has a different sort of a plan which makes it more sustainable in the long run - however it would be inaccurate to say that the recession hasnt reached AD - becuase it has - our firm and those we know are testament to that.

Any career advice needed ( built environmnet, design, engineering and construction ) we are the people to talk to just PM us.

well it all depends where or wat company u r looking at moving into... keep everythign in mind the rents the expenses and the salary they r givng u... i am also working in the same field and this sector is effected by large all over the UAE them announcing big investments is one thing and workign on new projects or halting projects in IT is another...

which is the case companies are making do with wat they have rather than expanding... that is one of the reason one has started hearing terms like ITIL here in dubai a lot more now... they working on improving the processes makign them effecient and working on findign to work with lesser over heads... even the biggest companies in uae local or mnc are following the same...

if u r givien a package or an offer see what the companies firing rate has been... how many people have they thrown out in the past 1 year... hoiw many are old staff how many new etc... u can always cross check with people here in dubai auh etc...

if u need any more advice do let me know...

have looked at the options of kuwait, qatar and bahrain...
