I dont think chicago is going to win, I have my bets on Madrid, not that I want them to win.
and i think chicago not winning is going to be less about the city but more about people's misgivings about international politics, security screenings and all that fun.

thoughts?

I agree. There's already an uproar about constituents who are displeased with Washington Park being used for a one-time stadium that will just get abandoned without the locals extracting much benefit from it. Politics at play like you said.

Madrid? I don't know.

Who else is competing?

chicago
madrid
rio de janeiro
tokyo

madrid has an issue because London is hosting 2012 so does IOC go for europe again. although they had a very strong showing for 2012 so that may work for them.
rio would be the first south american city i believe so there is a little legacy thing there

they just had recent evaluations and rio came out on top...followed by madrid and then chicago and finally tokyo...

Rio looks like the best candidate due to the fact there hasnt been olympics held in South America but since they are hosting the world cup as well in 2014...so brazil might not have enough money to host to massive sporting events

madrid is 2nd best but since olympics were already held in europe 2012...it wont go back to europe again

chicago looks like a good candidate and its been 20 years since they were last held in North america....

toyko is the weakest...

so its between rio and chicago....

i personally wish Rio gets the olympics so that in 2020...toronto can get the olympics

Worried

what waste of trip for the Obamas -

I don't think they have Olympics in the same continent one after the other - so with winter olympics being in Vancouver - chi town's chances were pretty small.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

did not stand a chance? as if being on the shortlist of 4 is an easy feat especially for a city with its first bid, rio was on bid#3 and madrid on bid #3, not sure about tokoyo, although they hosted back in the 50s i think.

7 cities bid, 4 bids were accepted, one won

if you recall before sydney won the 2000 bid, melbourne 1992 and Brisbane 1996 bids were rejected.

although i said it from day one, i did not think chicago was going to win, and projected rio to win it anyways.

gives me an excuse to go to rio

Crappy

Lol saw that during class. I wasn't really shocked that Chicago got out since South America has never held the Olympics..But out in the 1st round!? That's ridiculous.

Rio took it for many reason, and IOC literally went out of their way to award it to Rio for its gaming factor. Brazil is THE Soccer Capital of world, if not other sports (and yes I am exaggerating a bit..but you get the point).

Chicago may have been a better candidate in terms of management/organization of the event/overall outlook and face-value, but IOC was not interested in that. Brazil offers crazed fan frenzy, beaches, a touch of tropic in the open, and last but not least a well-deserving candidate. Well done Rio!

Was a good effort though!
