      Salam to all Mujaahideen!
As we know, there every where is cable connection for Internet in Pakistan! I will talk precisely about Karachi, cuz I am interested in this city...
      Few questions!

What you need to setup the whole network ? e.g.
What type of sever, speed, etc ?
Which cable you using for cabeling ? Coaxial or Cat 5/6 ?
Which switch or Router ? How many max ports ?
How you get ISP ? is it Dial-up or DSL/High speed ?
How much you paying monthly ?
How much you charging from clients ?
Do you use any signal booster after 50 feet of cable ?

      I would appreciate you,
Johny, Aceone or any other who have any experience ?
      thanks

So far the cable net in Pakistan is only working as individuals opening cable net as in thier neighborhood etc. No giant or a single organization has covered the whole city. even the whole area.

I heard Jung Groups "Info net" has the licence but its been ages even they havent been able to lay down such a big network (even tho they already have thier TV Cable network in the city. Its risky, its messy, its expenssive, & u dont know the out come.

Another organization called "Go4Broadband" has tryed something similar in limited areas, lets see what happens to them, they charge u around 1500 for 80 TV channels & ratio of 1:40 on 64 kbps data link. or around 2100 if u get ur ratio from 128 kbps channel.

Apart from them the ppl who run cable net in thier neighborhood etc, thier charges, service quality totally depends from individual to individual. e.g. 400 to 1500, service as 10-15 connections on single dialup to 50 connections on a settlelite downlink, ISDN or DSL.

Same goes for profit, depends on where ur cable net is operational, how many users u have, how much they pay, what kinda service u get & what u provide etc etc.

What you need to setup the whole network ? e.g.What type of sever, speed, etc ?

Totally depends on number of users, usually ppl are running P-III, P-IV machines with 128 to 512 MB RAM & they are working fine.

Which cable you using for cabeling ? Coaxial or Cat 5/6 ?

Mostly u will see Cat 5/6, its easy to handle then coaxial in a typical karachi cable environment, typically Coaxial u will either see when they need to cross some major Road, or in contrast once i saw a Radio units to do the same.

Which switch or Router ? How many max ports ?

Most cable operators dont exceed the 50-100 users they dont even need a router.

Its an un-planned network so usually ur trafic startes from 8/16 port 10/100 MBPS switch, when u get new users in somedirection u place another 8 port switch there & move further & so on.

How you get ISP ? is it Dial-up or DSL/High speed ?

If u r planing Dialup u can virtually get the dial up hours from anywhere, but i dont think so u will need a dialup connection.

In Pakistan u will get Sync DSL, & u wont be able to use the samephone line for the same, Speeds & COsts vary.

128 shared (its either 4 or 6 parties who will share it) is RS 7500/-

      64 CIR 20000/-

      128 CIR 30000/-

How much you paying monthly ?

pick ur choice from above & make ur calculation how much u will need more for other accesorries e.g. if ur switch burnt, some wires broke, other bills etc.

How much you charging from clients ?

depends on the area, kind of a service, in clifton defence u even pay 1200, ...& then there are others who even pay 400

Do you use any signal booster after 50 feet of cable ?

huh?? 50 feet?? trust me u wont even need one for atleast 100-120 meters. & thats a huge distance, u will surely be placing a switch if u r going that far without a user.

I was going to say the samething, that in Lahore, I know that two main companies have setup hybrid fiber-coax networks serving most residential areas of the city. Funny how Karachi was left behind... may be it's the size of that city. But one thing is for sure that cable.net.pk started providing neighborhood services in Karachi years before we even heard about it in Lahore. Anyway, times change.

I think the basic two problems are the size & infra structure of the city. Like I mentioned two companies already have the license but its been a year one havent started its service while other has only tryed in few of the parts of the city
