A colleague is selling his IBM R40e laptop. He said he bought it ~9 months ago and now he's decided to buy a MAC for audio/video etc. Its a 2GHz Intel Pentium M with 256MB of RAM, 10/100 NIC, modem port and 2 USB 2.0 ports bla bla bla. It sounds good and meets my requirements but the problem is that the warranty of the laptop cannot be extended [checked with the vendor] and secondly it does not have a carry case.
Initially he was selling it for USD833. My final offer was USD750 and he agreed to it. I asked him to check with the vendor if the warranty can be extended and just today he came back to me saying that the warranty cannot be extended. He's brought the price down to USD 638 because I complained that the laptop did not have a carry case, no extended warranty and no wireless NIC.
I think its a good price but I need second opinion. Do you think its wise to buy a laptop for which you cannot extend the warranty etc? I need the laptop as I'll be moving out to U.K in Feb, inshaAllah, for my Masters. I also plan to get the laptop insured once I reach U.K.
I need your opinion on this guys ....

$638 seems alright. How long is the warranty for? If you still have some (about 6-8 mths) then you should fine. Is it a Pentium or Celeron 2.0 ghz?
Here, i found this:

he's got about 2 months of warranty left .... and its a Intel Pentium M and not a celeron, else I wouldn't go for it. I basically need it for my Masters to compile/run exploits and play around with other pen test software. And for the obviously - word processing email etc. I think it should serve the purpose. If it lasts for a year then I'd say its paid its debts ... inshaAllah !
P.S: Because the lappie was bought from Dubai, I don't think I can avail the warranty in U.K as the receipt/warranty is not in my name etc .. that's what the IBM laptop distributor told me

The price on that laptop, when converted to Dirhams (AED), is ~4650 whereas the lappie I'm looking at is for only AED 2300 ... I think its a good price, nahee? I haven't taken it for a ride as yet, wil get it today for the test run ...

LOL ...not really just trying to help
i am not sure if you checked the warranty yourself on IBM Web site..you can do so on this Web site, but you'll need the serial number:
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/si...ty/warranty.vm
As far as i know, if the machine is still under warranty the new extended warranty contract can be purchased directly through IBM. I am not sure why the vendor told you otherwise. Here is info for R40's:
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/st...1561&x=14&y=15
Also you mentioned about travelling to UK with this ThinkPad. I would suggest you might register for IWS ( international warranty service) for EMEA region while you are purchasing extended warranty. It would be veryyy convenient for ya.

Hope this is any help.

Extended service contracts can only be ordered for in-warranty, non-refurbished machines that were purchased in the U.S.

yikes
hummm well you might want to contact IBM in that country he bought it from and ask them directly. That would be last resort to see if they can give you any more warranty.

IBM does not directly deal with laptops (or any of their products for that matter) in U.A.E ... they cannot. They need some local rep to do that .... and the distributors are the authorized people for this matter ... and I checked with the distributor and he said that they could not extend the warranty ... there are three distributors and this particular distributor (where the guy bought the laptop from) said that they don't extend it .. maybe others do ...

NOS jawaan, i wouldn't worry so much about the warranty if I were you. You have 2 mths, if it lasts for 2 mths then its going to keep going. My 2 cents worth!

i purchased an a22e from tigerdirect for $650~ (ended up consting me ~200$, but thats a long story). it only had 2 months warranty with it.
its been over a year now. still going good (some minor problems). its used as a tv room when your wife wants to watch something that you don't, so you just end up browsing laptop.

All IBM's warranties can be claimed glabally, I be more interested in whether the warranty is transferable or not. You are still getting a damn good deal thou.
