Hi Folks,

I've nephews at my sister's home and they are in a growing age where they just want to surf the internet in the leisure times and especially goto the websites recommended by there "friends". My brother-in-law, somehow, has got a suspicion that these kids may be visiting some unethical and unhealthy, or in real means, "porn" websites. He asked me if he can block the access to these websites by any means?

I dont think of any way, but is there any better suggestion anyone has? I heard about some software that can do it but i'm not 100% sure.

Let me rephrase my question. Is there a way we can block the unwanted or porn websites that our children may have quick access to?

Thanks in advance.

Software like NetNanny, WebSitter should get that job done.

They're not freeware, and you will have to pay for them. NetNanny goes for about $40.

or if you're using windows vista - enable parental controls in the Control panel menu

There is this software suite you can use SID and it is called contentprotect.. it is highly advanced with many features and you can control what they view, block specific types of websites, control the amount of time spent on the internet etc. i know because i personally used it for my relatives.

I tell you the simple trick SID

If you are running Windows XP just do this

Step 1: Click the Start button and select Run. Type the following text in that Run box: notepad c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Step 2: Now just go to the last line of the file, hit the enter key and type the following:

127.0.0.1 google.com (just for example)

Save the file and exit. That’s it. None of the above sites will now open on your computer.

You can block as many websites as you like with the above trick. If you want to unblock the sites later, open the same file as mentioned in Step 1 and delete the above lines.

The better way to do it is to block everything but what you want to allow. This works better because you can never keep track of new emerging sites. You would have to constantly update the list of blocked sites.

Do the following instead

The settings are under Control Panel | Internet Options | Connection (tab) | LAN Settings
  1. Put a checkmark next to "use a proxy server" and click on "bypass proxy server for local addresses"
  2. then click on Advanced and specify the addresses you want to bypass separating each entry with a semicolon ; example: www.myhomepage.com;www.microsoft.com;www... You can list as many as you want. If you have a long list, you may want to write it down in Notepad as a TXT file and then copy/paste it into IE/Firefox.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

Keep the computer in an open area where you can see. Software such as Netnanny, etc. are pretty good, but they are a annoyance when you are trying to do something. Simple measure such a one global account for everyone rather than individual accounts, restricted privleges so that kids can't hide their trail, etc. are simple yet effective measures. The more restrictions you have on them, they are more likely to find a way around it; If at not your home, maybe at their friend home. Keep is simple and transparent.
