HJSplit from http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/
tiny and simple tool. You will need it to merge them too.

^^ You have to use the same software to merge them back together in one big file.

HjSplit does not affect the file's format, but only splits it into chunks, and numbers the chunks by adding .001, .002, .003 to each chunk's extension.
Since the file you're trying to play has been sent to you from another computer, I would suspect that the codec needed to play the file is not installed on your computer.
try a media player like VLC, which will handle most formats.
from www.videolan.org/vlc/
or a codec pack such as K-Lite

there's no reason why it wouldn't play after joining the chunks back together.
you're prolly missing a step / doing something wrong somewhere.

I'm just an amateur, but...
Any chunks (.00* files) made by HJSplit from a video cannot be played back individually because the "headers" for the video are contained in the first chunk, therefore you can only play back the first chunk (.001) at most.
If you could play the file before splitting it on the same computer you're trying to re-assemble it, then i think you're not directing HjSplit to the correct .001 file (they have to be in order).
You might have accidentally renamed chunk .001 to .002 and vice versa .002 to .001
They would have still joined successfully because HjSplit can't tell which chunk contains the headers. But the joined file would'nt play because the headers (in chunk .001) are not up front.
Enough with the rocket science, I would simply suggest you to (presuming that you still have the original, unsplit video): Delete the mess created by HjSplit, the chunks and the rejoined file. Then create splits from the original video again. Take care not to misplace or rename any of the chunks. Feed the .001 file to HjSplit when you wanna rejoin the video (the tool will find the rest of the parts itself if they have not been renamed or misplaced).
If you dont have the original, unsplit video anymore, but just the chunks: Rename .001 to .002 and .002 to .001, then try joining them.

does it work for you???
is it because i am missing some software??
