Here is the deal. We have a Dual Quad core machine (8 cores) with 4 gb ram (maybe 8). OS is Server 2008 Std 64bit.

We want to run multiple virtual instances of IIS in VM, so that would mean an OS with IIS on top in the VM environment. What do we use software wise.

I know I need to read Virtualization for Dummies but can someone tell me what this Hyper V thing is? VMware ESXi? VirtualBox? Microsoft Virtual Server? what do we use. I know hyper V is not the way to go cuz the 2008 std version only allows 1 vm instance.

The reason why we need multiple instance is that a .net app that will be running on IIS for some reason was developed in a way such that it runs a system service and we can't have multiple users using it (thats what i was told). Hence the need to have multiple instances.

My virtualization experience is limited to Vmware workstation and Virtualbox (never in a business environment).

Hope this makes sense.

Hyper-V - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Btw, you should know exactly how much ram your servers have, not 4gb or maybe its 8gb.

I know I should know the specs yaar, but I didn't order it and I just came on board for this project. Right know, it is more theoretical. They have an idea of what to do but I think their solution is to throw money at something and hope that it'll take care of it.

We have three servers in stock now and I couldn't remember the ram config of the said server.
