I have been waiting for this move for a while now. FINALLY!

Google's new operating system to take on Microsoft

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Google is developing a new operating system for laptop computers in its boldest challenge yet to Microsoft's control over people's computing experience.
The new operating system will run through Google's nine-month-old Web browser, Chrome, according to a post late Tuesday night on the Mountain View-based company's Web site.
Google plans to introduce the operating system during the second half of 2010.
The new operating system is being designed for "netbooks," a low-cost, less powerful breed of laptops that is becoming increasingly popular among consumers primarily interested in a having a computer to surf the Web.
The Chrome browser could threaten Microsoft's Windows system, which has been running most personal computers for the past two decades.

I'm not a fan of Chrome...but this looks interesting...

No beta released before 2010?

Snobish

Has anyone used Google Andriod or tried Andriod LIVEcd? I think it can give an interesting insight about how google handles an operating system and of course it will also give a relative benchmark.

It's an interesting development indeed. However, I'm a little wary of the lightweight aspect of the OS and wonder whether it can be extended beyond web computing apps and support resource intensive desktop apps.

That being said, if Google achieves considerable market share, then we might see a paradigm shift in desktop apps with software vendors offering parallel solutions online as well.

Newly Born Companies with rich cash but not-with longstanding $$ flow always underestimated Microsoft. They forget about the fate of Lotus 123, IBM, Apple, Sun, Real, Opera, HP, Dell ... or any other tom-dick-harry who try to compete with MSFT.

The concept of Chrome OS is founding around Web 2.0 with HTML5 standard is the key. As far i understand, COS will be optimized and will do only one thing: accessing the web and it will definitely developed around Google Core (Search, Gmail, Docs, Youtube, Maps).

For example: if you wanted to add some songs to your ipod you will need a pc or mac for that, that's where COS goes to hell.

Google also says that Chrome will be faster to start, easier to use and more secure than Windows. We will have to see about that. So far the other versions of Linux (COS will use Linux kernel) sold on netbooks have confounded users, who have largely rejected them in favor of Windows machines.

Final verdict: It will be a failure for Google just like Chrome Browser didn't get the widespread support from industry specially corporate. Google didn't learnt the lesson yet, they pioneer the field of Q&A online but the juice was taken by Answers.yahoo.com & Answers.live.com now bing.

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Are you sure ... Google Chrome Browser is failure ... I love it .. im using it right now ... As far as Big Corporate's r concerned ... there are people with old mentality ... " Lakir kay fakir" they know what to do .. what they have learned ... Not motivated enough to do something new or amazing ...

You have mentioned APPLE is a loser ... I don't agree with you ... MAC OS X is one amazing OS ... i want to switch to it 4 years but because 3ds max don't support it so i was left with no option .. but now i m learning "Houdini & blender" to move to it ...

In beginning ballmer said iphone "hahahaha" ... not for business or Corporations

now its the best phone available on market ... I have first Gen iphone ... then 3G ... now planning to get 3G S ...

When i see other phones Nokia or Sony or Blackberry .. i feel they r still in past

Firenze,
Don't discount COS just yet - I whole-heartedly agree with your first assessment about MSFT's deep pockets and their ability to compete based on their cash flow and consequently their ability to continuously innovate by virtue of their internal resources as well as acquisitions.

On the other hand, Google has been pretty successful in various areas starting from search/advertising where there's virtually no other service provider as effective and successful as Google. GMail leading the way in online email service - if you remember when GMail was launched, many felt that the business model is bound to fail with all the privacy issues surrounding targetted advertising... but today, GMail is one the most popular online email provider. Similarly, Google has made quite a headway into the SMB arena with its Google Apps suite allowing businesses to use applications for a small subscription fees. They are still very far from garnering widespread acceptance from the corporate world, but in my recent consulting engagements I've observed management considering these options. Google's Analytics service is another example of an extremely successful online service which is already proving profitable since its launch.

As far as the OS market is concerned, Google has a very tricky road ahead of itself, but in my opinion, if any organization can challenge MSFT's position, it's gotta be Google. I won't speculate on whether they're going to be successful or not, but Google's very nicely positioned at this juncture in time. As others have noted, the OS is based on the web computing paradigm, and we've already seen how successful the SAAS model has been over the last few years. I can only see this pattern to continue... hell... even MSFT has started to offer what it is calling Software and Services (not software as a service) because in Gates' own words, this is where the future is. So if other application vendors also follow suit and start offering their software online, then this lightweight OS can prove to be a key market contender.

Thank you for making it fair..

Agreed, but here is the point all of the Google strategy is based on SEARCH, whereas Search Business is part of Microsoft Online Division and which is dept. of another division, so that much Microsoft care about it internally.

MSFT is looking ways to acquire Yahoo Search, which is most likely it will get hands on - next morning bing will own the 40% of search market - so here goes the Search.

Now the Google Adwords & Adsense - yes it controls more then 60% of online advertisement market and else. But i think people don't know about MSFT RazorFish which handle nearly all of corporate online spending - Google did get some of the corporate customers with the acquisition of DoubleClick but still long way to go. The corporate is where the real money reside !

Gmail userbase is mostly technical even today after 5 years of its launching.

But here is the twist, MSFT presence in corporate: Exchange & Outlook - i don't see any Forbes 100 or 1000 company which is relying on Google for email.

The answer is Microsoft Office live & Microsoft Azure - but still i believe Google APP is promising but the history of MSFT shows they catch up very fast - so that's why i am saving my verdict.

Agreed, i am using it from 2 years now.

Spooky

Google Chrome is indeed not a big hit. It got support due to Google's name. Resources that is use from a pc is as high as of IE and it also makes a separate process to run another tab. Where as in Firefox its just in one process.

I am using Minefield a pre-versions to all final Firefox releses. Run smoothly and the best is the fasted Java Engine. Though it also have few drawbacks.
