you can't play a torrent file. I take you downloaded this torrent file for some movie or media file? The file which you downloaded does not contain any media contents itself. It only POINTS to the sources where actual media file exists, ready to be downloaded. Torrent software reads this file and connect to those sources and starts downloading ACTUAL media file; once download is complete you can play it using your default media player or with other suitable application (depending upon media format).

I use uTorrent, but I heard BitTorrent is better.
What do you have as a torrent? you may need additional software once it's downloaded by a torrent program.

utorrent is nice. Doesn't take up many resources either. Just make sure to tweak its settings for your liking and you're set to go.
To open torrent files, just follow these easy steps:
1. Download a torrent client, as Gizzy pointed out earlier.
2. Install the client.
3. All your torrent files should now open with the torrent client by default whenever you click on a torrent file.
4. When clicking on a torrent file, it will say "Open with *torrent client(whatever the name of your client is)*", Click OK.
5. Check your torrent client and the file should now be present in the download bar. The rest is just waiting for it to finish downloading.
6. When finished you can right click, click Open Containing folder, and it will take you to the folder where the file has downloaded.
That's all there is to it.

Like how many connections it should use, the number of uploads/downloads, etc...
Just some of the personalized settings. But you don't necessarily have to mess with them at all, it will still work just fine on default settings (recommended for most anyways).

I think torrents are faster, therefore better.

Just remember to have a notice of the media sharing laws of your country. Also to run torrent smoothly configure the firewall on your internet security if you have any and also route the port in your router and tweak the settings of torrent client accordingly.
