Ok, its that time of the year when I'm spoiling to get my hands on a new communication device. Previously I've been very much against Apple products as they are too proprietary for one and then it feels like I'm joining a cult.

I've played around with iPhone when it first came out, set it up for some company executives and have been intrigued with them. Lately I've heard about ways to not be stuck with proprietary apps and services (ATT) so thinking of trying it out.

A. Is anyone out there getting rid of their iPhone? I wanna try it out for a reasonable price before going for a full blown 3gs version with all the bells and whistles. I'm going to be searching/monitoring EBay but just thought I'd ask here as well.

B. For those who use iPhone what's one of the features you use. What is one of the apps that you are in love with?
Please consider the following before replying to this:
- Please don't point me to the Apple site for features, I know I can get it there
- Don't start with "its the best thing out there since sliced bread"

All advice/help is appreciated.

Like you, I resisted the iPhone for the first two years after it came out, and stuck with a blackberry and later a windows mobile phone. However, I gave in eventually this past summer and got the 3GS about two months back.

I have to say that I've been using it for many other things than I used my older phones. While previously, I mainly used my cell for voice, SMS, and email, with the occassional web browsing, I'm using the iPhone for the same features as well as a lot more web browsing and multimedia. I've basically replaced my car stereo's USB stick with the iPhone bluetooth.

In terms of apps, I'm afraid I still haven't started using any with great consistency. I downloaded a whole bunch, but most of them were one time use for me. The three apps that I've used more than others (albeit, again, only sparingly) are Twitterific (for posting/checking twitter), Shazam (for identifying music), and Save Benjis (for price comparisons on products).

That's a good starter for this thread.
Maybe I should list out what I do with my WinMo iPaq: Besides the usual phone, SMS and other PIM functions (contacts, calendar et al) I heavily rely on it for email, web-browsing, GPS, teethered internet connection/sharing for laptop, storing passwords, photo album and Camera.

And then occasional games (solitaire, sudoko mostly), reading ebooks, dictionary, audio/video, limited IM and Skype, FTP and other online file manipulation, notes taking, spreadsheets and calculator.
Plus I do have Remote Desktop application which I've needed to use a few times, but I guess there are other alternatives to that.
I think that covers 99% of the functions. Right off the bat I can see I can find apps to fit the above.

Ok Topimeister, let me break it down for you a bit.

Yes, its called jailbreaking and there is whole industry out there for it. After jailbreaking, you will find apps that would never see the light of the day on Apple Store ever. And you dont have to be stuck with ATT either. After the jailbreak process, unlocking is 2 steps away. [To unlock, iphone first needs to be jb'ed]. All this is software driven, unclocking and jailbreaking, so if anythng ever screws up, conenct the iphone to itunes and restore. Apple nerds will never know u had your fone jb'ed and unlocked and you get to keep the warranty.

Just a word of warning here. The jailbreaking+unlocking process for 3GS is rather sketchy and unless you own an apple computer, i would advise against purchasing a 3GS version. With each software and firmware update Apple has tried to patch up the holes in its OS that lead to jailbreaking. Current firmware version for iphone is 3.14 and all the new 3GS out there in the apple store have this firmware pre-installed. And for the most part, those iphones are proving difficult to jailbreak. My suggestion would be to get a 3G or 3GS iphone with a firmware version os 3.0 or 3.1 or 3.11.

• Yes you can POP as many email accounts on your iphone as you want, including the usual yahoo.gmail.hotmail and MS Exchange.
• Web browsing using the built-in Safari, is the smoothest ive seen on a mobile device (although iphone lacks Flash support, so no flash content will be displayed on the browser. This being the sole #1 reason and the only reason im unhappy with iphone)
• ATT wont allow tethering altought the technology and ability exists on the jailbroken iphone. Its a cellular network issue at this point.
• GPS, storing passowrds, camera, photo albums, ebooks, All-in-one IM, Skype, FTP. note taking, spreadsheets, all supported either built in or with the help of an app (some are free, some are paid).
• There is also a VNC like app for remote desktop access for jailbroken iphones.

No actually it doesn't. But on the contrary it helps u shed less tension on a pathetic piece of plastic which's soul purpose is to work like a cell phone.

U can look into touch sensitive plus D-pad or qwerty phones out there. Because once ur phone is spilled on the ground and the touch ceases to work, work ur way around using other options.

Frankly to me, iphones are a lot less manipulative... as compared to WM phones.

Cold_Fire, I have used all PDAs from Palm Pilots when they first came out to Windows CE to windows mobile 6.5, from Blackberry enterprise servers to the latest nokias.
