Mushtaq still harbours hopes of a Pakistan recall

Sohail hints at Mushtaq’s return against SA

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan may recall leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed following his record-breaking feats for English county Sussex this season.

"He has taken a lot of wickets for Sussex - who won the County Championship on Thursday for the first time in their history - and we can’t ignore that," chief selector Aamir Sohail said on Thursday. "But he has been out for a long time and we need to see if he is bowling well enough to be pitted against South Africa."

The 33-year-old Mushtaq, who played the last of his 50 Tests against New Zealand in 2001, became on Wednesday the first bowler to take 100 wickets in an English County Championship season since 1998.

Sohail said Mushtaq would play against the South Africans in a one-day practice game in Karachi on September 24. "We know he is an experienced bowler. But we also feel that the quality of opposition in the County Championship is not very high. So we want to see for ourselves how he bowls in the practice game against the visiting team.

"If the need arises we can also hold him for the one-day series and then play him in the three-day tour match in Lahore to see if he can be played in the Test series against the Proteas,"
he added. Mushtaq, who has taken 183 Test wickets, is due to arrive home later this week.

Oh yes. I want Mushi back!!!

don't keep your hopes too high. PCB at times is very good at releasing and issuing statements to shut up critics. they are full of hot air only. i'll believe only when i'll see mushi playing in ODs and test matches. even practice matches are of no use. guy has taken 100+ wickets in county and PCB still wants him to go through practice matches to show whether he is upto par to play against SA. in my opinion, this is BS. majority of the players in the team are new to SA and they have their places cemented in the team but when it comes to mushi, PCB wants him to play in practice matches.

Aamir Sohail must self-introspect whether he is a good selector against Proteas if he does not select the in-form Mushtaq! As it is...he was never a good batsman.Just mere outspokeness does not make a person a good selector.

  • Shahid and Moin back in favour

LAHORE, Sept 19: Pakistan has announced a 14-member team to play against South Africa for Shoaib Muhammad Benefit match to be played at the National Stadium, Karachi on Sept 24.

South Africa is touring Pakistan from Sept 22 to play three Test and as many one-dayers. PCB has not yet named Pakistan's captain for the South African series. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis have also been included in the team along with Moin Khan, Mushtaq Ahmed, Shahid Afridi, Azhar Mahmood and Salim Elahi.

Wasim, who had called it a day after the World Cup-2003, would be an added attraction for the spectators.

Waqar, who led Pakistan team in the World Cup which failed to qualify for the second stage has not announced his retirement.

He will have a chance to prove his match-fitness to the anxious selectors after the new-look Pakistan team's lacklustre performance against minnows Bangladesh.
  • Team: Shahid Afridi, Salim Elahi, Imran Nazir, Naveed Latif, Misbah-ul- Haq, Azhar Mahmood, Moin Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Mushtaq Ahmed, Saqlain Mushtaq, Bilal Asad, Saeed bin Nasir, Wahab Riaz.

Whoah!! Big Names there. Wasim & Waqar back in Action! So are Afridi, Moin, Mushi, Saqi and Mahmood.

Bring it on!!!!!!!!

Instead of bringing in guys like Wasim or Waqar for spectator enjoyment, they should try out worthy youngsters.
Like Saeed Bin Nasir, Abul Rauf, Fazle Akbar.

South Africans to discuss tour after Karachi bomb

South Africa's cricket team will discuss on Saturday whether or not they will tour Pakistan after a bomb blast in Karachi on Friday, a United Cricket Board (UCB) spokeswoman said.

The squad is scheduled to leave on Sunday for three one-day internationals and three tests, at Lahore, Peshawar and Karachi, between September 26 and October 27.

Karachi has been the target of several bloody attacks, mainly on Western targets, in recent years.

They include a bombing in May 2002 outside the hotel where the New Zealand cricket team were staying that prompted the cancellation of the tour, though Friday's explosion did not cause any casualties.

"The players know about it and it will be discussed when the squad gathers in Johannesburg tomorrow (Saturday)," UCB communications director Bronwyn Wilkinson told Reuters from Johannesburg.

"We have asked Ben van Deventer (a police security expert who was a member of a UCB security delegation that visited Pakistan this week) to get more information from the South African security services."

The South Africans decided to tour after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) promised them the same level of security as that afforded to visiting heads of state.

The Pakistanis' assurance came after the UCB had been advised by the South African government to avoid Karachi and Peshawar.

The PCB denied South Africa's request to amend the fixtures, and a security delegation visited Pakistan before the decision to tour was taken.

The current visit of the Bangladesh team is the first full tour to Pakistan by any country since the September 11 attacks in the U.S. two years ago.

Yeah sure ..... What a bunch of cowards these S. Africans ..... why not mesmerize Pak-Cricket with such farcial boundage of "We'll take the security assurances to the letters" ......

I hope for the next time Pak tours SA they should also send a security team to check the situation ..... whether our players can go out in the evening without being robbed or attcked .....

This is really tragic and while the bomb yesterday raised the posibility of the tour being cancelled, it still comes as a shock. The South Africans have taken the easy way out. Personally I think Pakistan should turn down their offer of playing the series in SA or at another neutral venue. SA is hardly a safe place.

S. Africa cancel Pakistan tour

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - South Africa have cancelled their tour to Pakistan because of security concerns, the United Cricket Board (UCB) says.

The tour was given the go-ahead on Thursday but the UCB decided to call it off because of a bomb blast in Karachi on Friday. South Africa were due to leave on Sunday.

"The UCB regrets that South Africa is unable to tour Pakistan at this time due to yesterday's bomb blast in Karachi and the deteriorating security situation in Pakistan," UCB media officer Gerald de Kock said by telephone from Johannesburg on Saturday.

De Kock said there was still hope the two teams could meet at an alternative venue.

"The UCB has offered the Pakistan Cricket Board the option of playing the series in South Africa or at a neutral venue," he said.
