Yes Islam allows a man to marry 4 wives. Let us not get into that argument. But what I've seen is that in our Indo-Pak culture these type of marriages are still uncommon and looked down upon, not as easily accepted by society as much as they are in middle eastern countries. For example, I have a friend from Labanon who thought that when she gets married, if her husband went for a second marriage, she'd be perfectly OK with it because that's how she's been brought up. That possibility has been instilled in her from childhood. It's a natural part of their culture. Often times, there isn't a need but it is done just because it is allowed. But the women there don't really care.

Not that I'm complaining (), but what do you think is primarily the difference in these two Islamic set-ups.

Norm is nothing more than what is a common practice. In USA, you cant marry your first cousin that easily without society somehow looking down at you. In Pakistan, its a normal thing

Seems TLK you have not been to West Virginia and the Appalachian Mountains........they do marry first cousins!
