It wasn't as much as show off, but more like the tradition...now these days, things and intentions have changed I guess.

by the way, i'm from India and i can tell you that there is Hijaab/parda/veil in Hinduism as well. women folks in rural india, which comprises over 75% of the population, take ghunghaT [veil] and their culture is more restrictive on women than ours.

No one answered? What did you want to know?

For some, abs is not something to hide (hindus, bengalis, some arabs, many women from various parts, whatever)

For some even chest/breasts is not something to hide (mostly africans) and

For others, nothing need to be covered (such as French, nudists, whatever).

I thought Saris were worn in Pakistan too. same for lengas.
well, not all show their bellies, ppl who feel uncomfortable dont.
but yes, there is less aversion to abs being visible.

sorry, but i didn't say that. they do clad fully, head to toe. invariably, all religions require women to cover themselves up. i live in a predominantly mennonite/amish county and here ppl still live like 1800's. they ride horese buggies, they got no furnitures, their women cover head to toe except hands and face. they have no electricity or running water in their homes.

^ thats interesting ..
but don't you think its rather silly to use horse and buggies when there are cars available?
I know I'm straying from the topic but think about it - whats the deal with the Amish anyway?

This is a very immature way of looking at things. For one, I don't feel attracted to a culture that supposedly promotes nudity or skin showing. The Indians were dressing a certain way even thousands of years ago, even when people in the world weren't aware of their existence, or it wasn't so easy to travel to it. Who were they trying to attract back then?

Also, as Hashmat pointed out, it varies from culture to culture. In some cultures women cover from head to toe, while others are okay with showing more skin. Waise I too never have understood why people want to show their skin, especially when I see really old and fat aunties wearing tight and revealing blouses. Because they are certainly not looking attractive, why then?
