Shoaib needs five months to get fit

Monday, November 16, 2009
From Abdul Mohi Shah

ISLAMABAD: Shoaib Akhtar will require another three to five months to get into shape for the strenuous cricket activities following a liposuction surgery conducted on him the other day.

The Pakistan fast bowler underwent surgery at a private hospital in Islamabad on Friday, shedding a good amount of fat in the process.

“He would require three to five months to get fit. Any one going through such surgery needs a proper rehabilitation programme to get fit and ready for the strenuous exercise. Any attempt to make an untimely comeback could further complicate his fitness problems,” said Dr Waqar Ahmad, Deputy Director General Pakistan Sports Board.

Waqar said that Shoaib is already 34. “In such an age, there are always chances of complications. Shoaib has to be careful in order to regain his full strength.”

Dr. Humayun, who the other day while talking to ‘The News’ admitted conducting surgery on the player, said Shoaib had been given general anesthesia for the purpose.

Meanwhile, former Test pacer Sarfraz Nawaz expressed his unhappiness over Shoaib’s decision to reduce the fat through liposuction. “He definitely has taken a wrong step. It is like taking a shortcut to make your body trim and ready. He should have instead tried to reduce the weight and trim his physique through workouts. That way you reduce your weight every day,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is totally in the dark regarding the development and no prior approval has been sought by the bowler who has decided to go through the process. “All the players who are in contract with the board are supposed to take the PCB in confidence before going through any such exercise. In Shoaib caseís we know nothing. However, we are in process of gathering the facts,” said a PCB spokesman.

Despite surgery, it is unlikely that Shoaib would be in a position get ready and in form for the Test series against Australia starting in 40 days time.

But does it also mean that our batsmen are basically tulley or tukeybaaz, hence thrive in this short format of cricket but struggle in the longer versions because most of them lack the necessary patience, temperament, skills, planning & organisation to do well under pressure?

Don't get me wrong, our 50-over (4th best After South Africa, Australia and only marginally behind Windies) and Test (3rd best after Australia and England) record is still better than most other teams but lately we have struggled esp. in tests and it is more often the batters that have let the team down.

Saturday, November 14, 2009
KARACHI: Pakistan’s new Test skipper Mohammad Yousuf wants middle-order batsman Misbah-ul-Haq to fill the gap left by Younis Khan’s decision to opt out of the Test series against New Zealand.

“Our team is fine but I have asked the board for Misbah-ul-Haq to fill the gap that has appeared in the middle order as Younis would not be playing in the series,” Yousuf said on Friday.

“He (Misbah) is a good batsman and I think he would prove helpful for the team. He has been playing well in domestic cricket and I hope he would also perform well in the series against New Zealand,” he said.

Misbah was dropped from all the three forms of the game against New Zealand. He is currently playing in Bangladesh in its domestic league.

Yousuf added that he would try his level best to bring the team together and go in the series as one unit. “Teamís performance depends on the unity within the team and I will try my best to bring together all the players and team management and give a top performance myself,” he said.

“I thank Allah for all this respect he has bestowed on me. I will try my best to lead the team to victory in the series,” Yousuf said.

He said that the board has asked him to lead the team in the series against New Zealand only — which comprises of three matches and he cannot say much about the future of the Test captaincy as it is a decision which has to be taken by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Yes, that's what I believe. NOT for money, but to bring down their own team mate, who happens to be their captain. After looking at 2nd and 3rd match with NZ, I couldn't help but think that these guys are giving away their wickets. Again, not for money, but to make sure that Younis doesn't succeed as a captain, not realizing that their are bringing a bad name to the country. I believe, the so called, "Seniors" are doing this intentionally, and frankly, I expected soemthing after the 3rd match loss to NZ. it is actually worse, as, Younis Khan was led to believe, before the NZ ODI's that he will get support from the players, but he didn't. To me that's worse than just saying that you should step down.

I completely support Younis khan in this action. Even if I was there in his shoes (and I have played cricket alot), I'd be disgusted if people would do that to me. not thinking that they are under minning the country. I understand that Younis is having a bad patch, but who doesn't.

This is pathetic in my opinion.

In the age of stump microphones, slow-motion lip reading, and ICC penal codes for racist slurs on the field, Pakistan’s pioneer sports channel has come up with an unbelievable series promo.
The private sports channel’s teaser for the upcoming India-Sri Lanka cricket series defies belief. As video clips showing Sri Lankan cricketers in action are screened, the soundtrack is provided by an old Hindi film song, the lyrics of which are: ‘Hum kaalay hain toh kya huwa dil walay hain.’ That roughly translates to, ‘so what if we are black, we are hearty sportsmen nonetheless.’
The promo pretty much leaves me speechless. In an age where tolerance, diversity, and respect are the grandest ideals, who in their right minds could go to such an extent? I wonder if the channel’s legal advisers (if there are any) or cricket experts (of which there are plenty) are aware of the marketing department’s latest feat.
For a moment, let’s forget about the ICC rules regarding racism. What impression will this blunder leave on the foreign viewers’ minds (let’s leave aside local viewers, who are probably enjoying it)? What will the Lankan team think if they ever have the misfortune of coming across this channel? Shouldn’t more sensitivity be on the cards given Pakistan’s tainted relationship with this team in particular?
We as a nation should be grateful for international channels such as Star Sports, ESPN, and Super Sport, for they give much less painful alternatives to sports fans in Pakistan. Not all of us are willing to overlook the audacity.

I came across a great letter from this blogger.
-------------------------------------------------------
Dear Imran Farhat,

So, you’re back. I’d tell you it’s good to see you again, but it’s not. You must be over the moon, what with being picked for all three formats. Why, you must think you’re a regular Kevin Pietersen, eh?

Unfortunately, Imran, you’re not. You may be a year or so older. You may be a day or so wiser. But underneath all that flash, beneath all the ICL bravado, you’re the same guy who’s going to perpetuate our opening problem. You’re the batsman who miscues an ambitious pull shot. You’re the player who attempts a cross-batted hoick across the line of the ball for inexplicable reasons. And you’re the guy who helps perfect the opposing side’s slip-catching skills.

All this leads me to conclude that you’re a wonderful husband.

Your wife must be praising you to her parents, for what else explains your father-in-law Mohammad Ilyas’s decision to accost the coach of the international cricket team and berate him for not selecting you on the basis of, ironically, bias. Even fewer fathers-in-law would threaten national selectors for not picking their sons-in-law for the Pakistan team.

I would love to hear your thoughts on how the PCB should handle an individual who allegedly threatened to ‘start a war’ against their selection panel. The board chose to make Mr. Ilyas part of the selection panel. Their logic must have been that those primed to do the most damage to the system should be placed in a position of power within that system so they have a stake in its survival. But would you have acted differently?

And do you have anything to say about Mr. Ilyas’s first order of business, which was to restore you to your position on the team? A justification for your inclusion is probably warranted, given your average of barely above 30 in both major forms of the game. And then there’s the matter of your discipline. Some called you a crybaby for phoning up a selector in the middle of the night and demanding to know why you were dropped. Apparently it got so heated that you were fined for dissent. But it doesn’t stop there, does it? When you jumped ship for the ICL you took a few more shots at the PCB for assassinating your career, as if your lazy wafts outside the off-stump weren’t the true culprits.

It’s for these reasons, Imran, that I’m convinced you’re an exceptional family man. I can just see the case Mr. Ilyas made on your behalf in front of the selection committee: sure my son-in-law has no patience outside the off-stump and will give his wicket away carelessly, but he always asks my daughter how her day went when they’re on the dinner table.

But I guess I have to face facts now, Imran. You’re back and there’s no use crying about it. It’s time to focus on young players such as Umar Akmal and Mohammad Aamer who are primed to ensure a very bright future for our team.

Pakistan cricket is at a very important stage right now. We’ve been deprived of home games and yet we’ve managed to win a World Cup and make it to the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy. What’s more, we as a nation want revenge when we play New Zealand in the UAE today. Beating that team in the Champions Trophy was supposed to be a sure thing, like it has always been, which is what made it all the more traumatising to lose to them in the Champions Trophy. We don’t just want to beat them. We want to maul them. But do not make the mistake of thinking that you’re the man to do the mauling.

Instead, please enjoy yourself, Imran. Don’t get too comfortable and please, don’t do any lasting damage while you’re out there. When you’re in the nets, don’t drive a ball straight at Saeed Ajmal and cause him bodily harm. He’s the best thing to happen to Pakistan off-spin bowling since Saqlain Mushtaq and we’ll need him in the Test matches against New Zealand.

Better yet, Imran, surprise us. Who knows, you may very well have a good series, maybe even comparable to that glory tour against the same team a few years back. You’re even capable of a Test century or two. Maybe you can take advantage of your selection to prove that you can be a long-term solution. Show us that you’re more than just another in the line of ICL alums who the selection committee insists on trotting out, forgetting that they were dropped for poor performance in the first place.

Best luck with your run, Imran. My regards to Ilyas sahib.

Warmly,

Farooq
Team news

Imran Nazir, Fawad Alam and Sohail Tanvir have joined the squad for the Twenty20 series. Mohammad Yousuf, who stands in for Younis Khan as captain for the Test series, sits out along with Salman Butt and Wahab Riaz.

Pakistan (possible): 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Imran Nazir, 3 Shoaib Malik, 4 Shahid Afridi (capt), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Fawad Alam, 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Mohammad Aamer, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Iftikhar Anjum/Sohail Tanvir, 11 Saeed Ajmal.

New Zealand will be without Kyle Mills and James Franklin, nursing shoulder and back injuries respectively. Jacob Oram is also unavailable - he's flown back home to attend the birth of his child. With only 12 players to choose from, they are likely to draft in Ian Butler and Nathan McCullum.

New Zealand (possible): 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Aaron Redmond, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Daniel Vettori (capt), 7 Neil Broom/BJ Watling, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Ian Butler, 10 Shane Bond, 11 Tim Southee.

Big Picture

After a riveting end to the ODI series, which New Zealand won 2-1, the focus turns to the Twenty20s, which Pakistan will feel they are better placed to trump. Pakistan conceded the ODI series in typically erratic fashion, making a meal of a chase of 212 before a phenomenal fightback staged by Mohammad Aamer and Saeed Ajmal ensured the game was settled in the final over. They will be disappointed by a fifth consecutive ODI series defeat, especially one they were well poised to win, but the Twenty20 games in Dubai present an opportunity to redress that.
Pakistan have a far superior record in Twenty20s this year - they won the World Twenty20 and overall have seven wins in nine games. New Zealand are no slouches themselves - they beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in what was their only highlight of a disappointing tour in September- but their success in Abu Dhabi couldn't hide their struggle against spin. Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi, with their wily variations, nibbled away at New Zealand while proving economical. With the pair, and possibly Shoaib Malik, likely to gobble a major share of the 20 overs, the New Zealand batsmen, who gave up 12 wickets at 22.42, face a serious challenge.
Pakistan face their own demons with the bat; the terrible shot selection that brought their downfall in the ODI decider prompted Afridi to liken his batsmen to "club cricketers", and the comparison will only be reinforced in the event of a repeat.
