I know, flip side to the paranoia. I think they're trying to set people's minds at east by showing how transparent their "data collection" process is and where our information is coming from in their storate:

https://www.google.com/dashboard/

This is what they have to say about Dashboard:

"Right now, the Dashboard focuses on the most popular products that you use when you're signed in to your Google Account. Also, the Dashboard shows only data that you generate or that Google records that's specifically associated with your Google Account. For example, searches you perform when you're signed in to Web History, or a shipping address you've stored in Google Checkout.

There are other kinds of data that Google records when you use its services, but which are not associated with your Google Account. To protect your privacy, that data is intentionally kept separate from your Google Account and thus is not visible on this page. Here are a few examples:

* Server logs
Like most websites, our servers automatically record the page requests made when users visit our sites. These server logs typically include your web request, IP address, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your request, and one or more cookies that may uniquely identify your browser. We store this data for a number of reasons, the most important of which are to improve our services and to maintain the security of our systems. We anonymize this log data by removing part of the IP address (after 9 months) and cookie information (after 18 months).
* Cookies
When you visit a Google product, Google remembers your preferences (for example, whether to use strict SafeSearch when you search the Web) using small files called cookies, which are stored on your browser. Google separates data that is associated with your browser's cookies and data that is associated with your personal Google Account; since the Dashboard displays data from your Google Account, cookie information is not shown.
* Interest-based advertising
Many websites, such as news sites and blogs, partner with us to show ads on their sites. To show ads that are more related to each user's interests, Google associates interest categories to an advertising cookie that's stored in your browser. The interest categories are based on sites you've recently visited and can be viewed, edited and deleted in the Google Ads Preferences Manager. (The Google Ads Preferences Manager also lets you opt out of interest-based ads altogether.)"

There are a lot of things to love about this pocket-sized version of Trillian, including its great-looking interface and its support for several different chat services. You'll need to sign up for a free Astra account if you don't already have one, but it's nice that Trilian's existing desktop users can just plug and play with no account setup required.

Little perks of Trillian on the iPhone include push notifications (yay!) and the ability to send photos. Managing contacts is also pretty easy. In fact, Trillian's the first iPhone chat app I've seen that has a straightforward way of moving contacts between groups.

I do have a couple of minor bones to pick with Trillian, though. First, no landscape keyboard? Seriously? IM is a typing-intensive activity, and the iPhone's small portrait keyboard doesn't cut it for fast and furious chats.

Second: it takes two clicks to close your current chat (the "more" button and then "end conversation"). Can't we just get a close button? These are minor issues with what's otherwise a great app, and a decent value at $4.99, especially if you use more than one chat service at a time.
Google’s Plan to Make the Web Twice as Fast

Google is apparently in the early stages of a research project that appears to aim as high as perhaps replacing the HTTP protocol, the fundamental technology that essentially makes the World Wide Web possible.

In a somewhat obscure post on the Chromium blog, the development branch of their ChromeChromeChrome browser, GoogleGoogleGoogle reveals they’ve been working on a new protocol dubbed SPDY for “SPeeDY” for its goal of making the web faster.

While HTTP is an “elegantly simple protocol” that has powered the web since 1996, the tone of Google’s post is almost patronizing, as if HTTP were our doddering old uncle that’s had his day and needs to be put out to pasture. Then again, Google’s hubris is perhaps warranted as one of the only companies with enough clout and resources to indeed spur on the “evolution of websites and browsers” with an entirely new protocol designed to speed up the communication between web servers and clients.

They reveal they’ve already got a prototype web server and a Chrome client with built-in SPDY support that they’ve been testing in the lab. With these tools they’ve reportedly been able to see an up to 55% speed increase in page loading, and feel like the project is now stable enough to warrant soliciting feedback from the web community. The SPDY documentation is now available, as well as the source code. Google encourages feedback on the new protocol in the Chromium Google Group.

What do you think, is Google onto something in thinking the basic protocol underpinning the web needs a refresh? Is it time to focus on the need for speed? Let us know in the comments.

In rather shocking news this morning, The Pirate Bay (TPB) has shut down its torrent tracker. The search engine remains, but instead of dishing up torrents it will instead serve as a magnet-link repository.

TPB cites that the concept of the BitTorrent tracker is dead. "There is no need to run a tracker any more" says their blog. Long-live DHT and PEX -- dynamic, decentralized torrenting technologies!

What this actually means for you and I -- the implications -- is that you need to make sure you have an updated torrent client, like uTorrent or Azureus. Something that supports DHT and PEX. Most of you will already have these technologies enabled by default -- you just don't know about them. In fact, even with this rather dramatic announcement, you probably won't realise any difference in your download speeds.

Piracy will continue as normal, don't worry.

It's simply the end of an era. Perhaps more interestingly, TPB have been talking to other tracker owners and torrent-download sites. They're pushing for everyone to move away from trackers and towards decentralization.

Whether this is simply a 'viva la piracy!' move, or a more sinister strategy by their new owners remains to be seen.
