Thierry Henry used to condemn cheating during his time at arsenal and now his own words have come back to haunt him as his cheating robbed Ireland of a place in the world cup. I hope justice is served at the world cup and France are knocked out in the first round. It will serve the cheats right.

Whole Soccer Germany is saddened today by the news of Robert Enke's suicide. Yesterday evening, at 6:25 P.M. Robert Enke took his life by throwing himself infront of a Train. He left behind a suicide note in which he says sorry to his wife, family members and friends for pretending that everything was fine. Enke was in pyschological treatment since 2003, but never made it public.

Germany's Football Federation cancelled their Test Game against Chile, DFB-President Dr. Theo Zwanziger told the Reporters. The game was scheduled for coming Saturday.

Reasons for this unbelievable act was his depression. Doctor's worldwide consider depressions since a few years as a illness. The Problem with Enke was, no one ever noticed that he was depressed. Neither his Team mates at Hannover nor the mates in the National Team knew that Enke is ill and has depressions.

What could possibly make a Pakistani fan turn away from a clinical performance by their cricket team, while it’s in progress? The score line of a James Cerritani and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi vs. Marco Chiudinelli and Roger Federer doubles game!

For a moment it almost seemed surreal: Federer in his ‘formal attire,’ a brown Nike jersey with white trim on the collar, wiping the hair off his forehead, with his left hand before bouncing the ball in his trademark style and then serving with body in perfect unison. And the receiver of the serve? For a minute it seemed as if the satellite signal had scrambled and the cable operators had changed the order of the sports channels. But no, it was true. Federer was in fact serving to Pakistan’s Qureshi in the ATP Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel, Switzerland.

That Pakistan were routing New Zealand in the first face-off since the infamous semi-final loss in the Champions Trophy seemed like an afterthought. The fact that Shahid Afridi, having scored 70 off 50 balls, was on a hat-trick after castling Danniel Vettori and trapping Nathan McCullum LBW, didn’t really matter. Because at the same time, Pakistan’s lone hope on the international tennis circuit, Qureshi, along with his American partner Cerretani were leading the Swiss pairing of Federer and Chiudinelli five games to four in the first set. Qureshi had aced into Federer’s body, and to hear the commentator say ‘that’s tremendous serving by the Pakistani,’ was unreal for many reasons.

It’s rare to hear or read the word Pakistan during an ATP tour. That the Pakistani was part of the event in Basel was an achievement itself, keeping in mind that Qureshi funds all his international tours personally. But playing Federer, albeit in a doubles match, was as much a dream come true for the fans as it was perhaps for Qureshi himself. And everyone knows when Federer is playing, the whole world is watching.

The biggest moment, however, came at the end of the match, amidst the joy of a Qureshi/Cerretani 6-4, 6-3 victory. It was surprising. It manifest in the form of a sentiment previously felt, but never at the same magnitude. When Federer and Qureshi shook hands, it seemed in that instant as if Pakistani tennis had been recognised, and that the country had had its much needed ‘positive moment’ on the tennis world stage.

As soon as the match ended, many frenzied phone calls were placed. People who could not articulate what the match itself had meant relied on analogies: ‘just imagine a Pakistani soap artist sharing a set with Al Pacino in a Hollywood movie.’ Comments like, ‘I didn’t know I was capable of such animosity towards Federer,’ were also made by die-hard Pakistani fans of tennis champ. To be fair to the Grand Slam winner, he did look out of sorts sharing the court with someone and not being able to control the fate of the plays. But a loss is nonetheless a loss.

As the initial euphoria from the Qureshi win – more than Pakistan’s victory over New Zealand – was dying down, two magnificent goals by Sohail Abbas propelled Pakistan to a 4-2 win over France in the hockey World Cup qualifiers in Lille, France. It capped an unbelievable day for Pakistan sports with the biggest moments coming from the most unlikely places. Such a hat-trick for Pakistan sports brought back memories of the 1990s when Pakistan ruled the world of cricket, hockey, squash, and snooker. Would it be premature to anticipate more glory days for Pakistan sports?
=====

amazing day, the highlight i would say is Asim's victory over Frederer , wonder when can we repeat the 90's when Pakistan held 4 world title at one time!

its good to hear such little good news when we dread bad ones everyday!

KARACHI: Pakistan’s tennis ace Aisamul Haq Qureshi and his Swiss doubles partner James Cerritani brushed aside tennis great and world number one, Roger Federer and his Swiss compatriot Marco Chiudinelli in straight sets at the Basel Open in the Swiss city on Tuesday.

Qureshi was at his serve-and-volleying best in the round-of-32 match as he and Swiss Cerritani cruised to victory against the world number one Federer and Chidudinelli in two sets, 6-4, 6-3 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2.6 million-dollar ATP tournament.

Playing in the world number one’s hometown, the Pakistani player and his partner were in control of the match from the first game and although Federer and his old friend Chiudinelli produced moments of brilliance, the grit and powerful serve-and-volley game of Qureshi and Cerritani proved too much in the end.

The Pak-Swiss pair will now play tournament first seeds Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia) in the round of 16.

According to the Professional Squash Association announcement, the hosts of the prestigious premier event being staged from November 1 to 7,will honour the achievements of some of the sport’s greatest players of all time at an official Championship Gala Dinner.

In addition to the sport’s greatest players from the past, the Kuwait Men’s World Open 2009 Higher Organising Committee will also recognise and honour the achievements of some of the players currently competing on the international circuit.

Apart from Jahangir, the other Squash legends include Geoff Hunt of Australia, Susan Devoy of New Zealand and Sarah Fitz Gerald of Australia.

Jahangir Khan, widely acknowledged to be the greatest player in the history of the sport, burst onto the international scene as a 15 year old in 1979 when he became the youngest ever winner of the World Amateur Individual Championship.

In November 1981, he became the youngest World Open champion of all time at 17 years of age beating Australian favourite Geoff Hunt in the final and went on to establish a remarkable 555 match unbeaten run over five and a half years, from April 81 until Nov 86, winning six World Opens and a record ten British Open titles.

A former Chairman of the Professional Squash Association, Jahangir retired from the sport in 1993 after helping Pakistan to win the World Team Championship in his home town Karachi. First elected Vice President of the World Squash Federation in November 1998, Jahangir was President of the WSF from 2002¡2008.

One of the greatest sportsmen Pakistan has ever produced, Jahangir was nominated as ‘Sportsman of the Millennium’ by the Government of Pakistan.

Geoff Hunt dominated the men’s game for most of the 1970s, winning the first four World Open titles, between 1976 and 1980, and a then record eight British Open trophies, from 1969 to 1981.

The formidable 62 year old Australian, who topped the world rankings for five years until December 1980, went on to serve as Head Squash Coach at the Australian Institute of Sport from 1985 2003, where he helped develop a new generation of Australian squash stars.

The Kuwait MenÆs World Open which boasts a prize fund of US$277,500, the largest ever offered by any World Tour event, is being held in the memory of His Highness Sheikh Saad Abdullah Al Sabah, The Patriarch Amir, in whose name the trophy shall be presented.

Meanwhile, leading Egyptians Ramy Ashour and Amr Shabana will be hoping to contest their third successive final in Kuwait after sharing similar honours in the 2007 and 2008 editions.

The pair are seeded three and four, respectively, in the premier event on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour.

For the first time, they are facing a relegation from the World Cup in New Delhi early next year if they fail to win this qualifier in France.

Stage is set in Lille for first World Cup Qualifier
28 Oct 2009 16:55

The first Worldhockey Men’s World Cup Qualifier starts Saturday in Lille, France, with 6 teams fighting for a single ticket for the Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010 scheduled next March in Delhi, India. While Pakistan are the overwhelming favourites to reach the winner-take-all final next Sunday, host France have prepared well for this event and could create some surprises.

France, Italy, Japan, Pakistan, Poland and Russia will be trying to join the nine teams already qualified through the Continental Championships, and the last two teams who will be qualified through Qualifiers 2 and 3, in New Zealand and Argentina, later in November.

Pakistan is the top ranked team in this competition (7th in the FIH World Rankings) and they are the logical favourites. They have never missed a World Cup and have stood four times on the highest step of the podium. With a stunning average of 123 Caps per player and twelve players with World Cup and Olympic experience, they are by far the most seasoned team! If Pakistan do not qualify for the 2010 World Cup, the news would shake the hockey world as much as the non-qualification of India for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

On the other hand, since their last honours in 1994, they have slid away from the podiums and have had to battle to be considered a top contender again. In Beijing, they produced a lacklustre performance, finishing only 8th, and, at the recent Asia Cup, they lost in the final to Korea.

Coach Shahid ALI KHAN has called back legendary penalty-corner specialist Sohail ABBAS who, at 34 and with 273 Caps to his name, will aim at participating in his... 4th World Cup, since his debut in 1998 in Utrecht.

Next in the FIH World Ranking is Japan (14th). They came very close to qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games, but were unlucky that Germany (World Cup holders and future Olympic Champions) were drawn in the same Qualifier (in Kakamigahara) after they finished a surprising 4th place at the Euro competition in Manchester.

This seemed to negatively affect the Japanese team progression, and they since have had very modest results, including a very disappointing 6th place at the Asia Cup and a 5th place at the recent Champions Challenge II, behind Poland (1st) and France (3rd), who are contenders in the Lille Qualifier. Japan will line-up in Lille as the youngest of the six teams, with an average experience of only 25 Caps and two international rookies.

France is not far behind Japan in the FIH World Rankings (17th) and have worked hard to prepare for this event at home. They openly expect to reach the final next Sunday, and then hope that the home crowd will be enough of a factor on the last day to further upset the hierarchy in the ruthless winner-take-all Final!

Coach Scott GOODHEART has put his team through an intense series of preparation matches. They finished a credible 6th at the 2009 Euro Hockey Championship, keeping their spot in the Elite category for the next European competition, and a respectable 3rd at the recent Champions Challenge II in Ireland, after beating Russia (5-3) but losing to Poland (1-3), both participants in Lille. Scott GOODHEART has selected a good mix of youth and experience. Behind veterans Frédéric SOYEZ and Mathieu DURCHON, the average number of Caps is 50 and only three players have played less than 10 international games.

Poland could very well be the dark horse in this competition. Ranked 22nd in the world, their recent results have been inconsistent. They had a superb win at the recent Champions Challenge II in Ireland, in front of 3 of the other contenders in the Lille Qualifiers (France, Japan and Russia), but soon after finished only 8th (and last) at the 2009 Euro Hockey Championship, sadly relegating them down to the European Trophy next time around.

They will line-up the oldest team in Lille (average age of 25.5) with plenty of experience despite their three international rookies. Four players were at the 2002 World Cup and eight were involved in the EHL recently with the two Poznan teams, including penalty-corner expert Tomasz DUTKIEWICZ, the charismatic, tough tackling defender who has a habit of scoring important goals for club and country, and was named Player of the Tournament at the Champions Challenge II.
The Polish players are usually extremely fit and, on a good day, can surprise any team. Their opening day match against host France could very well be a key match in the competition!
Russia, ranked just behind Poland in the World Rankings (23rd) is also another enigma for the opposition, producing irregular results but often performing well when it counts. They finished a modest 6th at the Champions Challenge II, but 2nd at the EuroHockey Trophy, winning their promotion to the top tier next time around.
At the 2008 Olympic Qualifier in Chile, they were called at the last minute to replace Bangladesh. They arrived with low expectations, having just finished their indoor season in the rough Russian winter, but, despite the intense Chilean heat and their abysmal world ranking (45th at the time), they managed to transfer their strong indoor experience to the larger field, beating the host team in a crucial game and cruising to a surprising 3rd place!
They arrive in Lille with a fairly young team, and we will need to wait for their first game against Japan to get an idea of what they are capable of producing.
Originally a reserve country, Italy were called upon after the surprise withdrawal of Egypt (ranked 21st in the world). They only finished a modest 7th at the recent EuroHockey Trophy and are coming to Lille with a very inexperienced team. Twelve players have ten Caps or less, including a total of only 4 Caps between their two goal-keepers.

The action gets underway on Saturday October 31 at the Lille Metropole Hockey Club in Lambersart. In theory, this opening day should see a predictable victory for favourites Pakistan against Italy, but the other two games, Japan vs. Russia, followed by France vs. Poland, could dictate the momentum for the rest of the competition for these four teams.
