- Apply a tiny amount of cooking oil to u're palms before applying mehndi.
- Sugar and lemon juice, dab some on once u're mehndi is dry

Always brush-off u're mehndi and try not to wet u're hands...all you need is trust and a little bit of pixie dust!

Doing a 'long bhaap' is said to make it darker. Basically get a pan on a stove and warm it up and put long on it. put ur hands a few inches away and let the smoke come upto ur hands.
I purposely made this bright to annoy you.

^with the mehndi?
Khair, the thicker the mehndi is applied the more there is color.

i will be applying mehndi tonight :P
are there any tips to get it off soon too??? i dont like mehndi when it turns all orangish
and yes i have tried that tip of Gina's sugar and lemon syrup.........it works

The lemon juice and sugar does two things-- one, the lemon provides a further catalyst for dye release in the paste itself (to penetrate your skin), and two, the sugar helps keep the paste on the skin for a longer duration of dye penetration.
I wouldn't really suggest putting anything on your hands before mehndi application though. You don't want any barrier between your skin and the mehndi.
Try to let the mehndi crumble off on it's own. Keep it on for a minimum of 3 hours if possible.
Clove oil can be dangerous for people. Many people are allergic to it and many are sensitive to it. So even though it's a good oil it isn't a great idea to use.
Something you can do while the mehndi is on and after it has been brushed off-- introduce heat to your hands. Turn on a hair dryer and lightly heat your hands (be very very careful not to burn yourself though!).
If you wrap and seal your henna after it's dry, moist heat is the best way to ensure your stain. You can use medical paper tape to cover the mehndi. Good luck!

my gujurati friends put eucalyptus oil on the hands before applying the mendhi, it brings out more color. So for the girls that are a bit more dusky they may want to do this because the color that showed up on my friends was pretty dark.
before bed apply the lemon sugar mixture and when you're ready to take it off apply more lemon sugar mixture and put some cloves on teh tawa. Once the cloves start smoking put your hands over the tawa and let the smoke dry the mixture. DO NOT BURN YOUR HANDS. After that scrape it off and you'll have a dark color.
But as someone once said sometimes you just get a crappy cone with bad color, you can't do much about that. They say if you make your own henna paste and you add eucalyptus oil to the mixture it will provide a deeper color.Latest Fashion shows I've come across: http://www.paklinks.com/gs/fashion-and-beauty/453551-desi-fashion-designers-that-ive-stumbled-across-3.html

tried and tested method of mine
once uv put ur mehndi on, let it dry completely, then b4 going to bed scrape the bits off (dont force it, if some bits dont come off then leave it on) then put vix on it (just lightly covering all the mehndi- but not drenching it)! then cover ur hand with a glove and go to sleep..in the morning because of the heat the colour will be very very dark, iv always received compliments on how dark my mehndi is.. iv always used this method & regardless of the mehndi iv had the same results
good luck

@sara, take a loofah and scrub it when you shower with warm water. the dark brown will come right off. only a light orange stain will remain.
