The best thing I ever got was a "bouncy seat". Its a little cradle type thing, battery operated, you turn it on and it vibrates. The different models come with different flashy-lights, grab-toys etc. Works WONDERS for gas pains. And many new moms dont know about the magic of these things. And they are very reasonably priced with a vast choice of colors and schemes.

I liked when people gave me clothes that were bigger than the baby's age. It can be hard to get out and shop with a baby, so it was nice to have a little supply going.

I also like personalized gifts. You can look at Pottery Barn Kids or Things remembered and you can get blankets with the baby's name embroidered on it.

I'd be wary of giving any real things, unless you know them very well and know what they've bought already. But if they're not very close to you, money or a gift certificate is the best thing

Money is the best, you're absolutely right. Essential baby items, like the crib, stroller, car seat, etc can be expensive and the money can easily be pooled by the couple to spend on these things as the need arises.

I believe a bed sheet or a bed set having cartoon characters on it...or a gift for the mom like a dress would also be quite nice...

Check and find out if the new parents are registered anywhere like Bbies R us, so you can rather give them what they want/need. If not I would suggest Gift Certificate if you want to just give cash. Believe me it helps to have gift cards to babies r us or Target or whatever place that provides baby stuff, i got a bunch of those from friends. The reason I say gift card as opposed to money is that way you know its for the baby. Hmm something they can really use is a jumbo box of diapers, a swing from Graco maybe. Something really nice would be a baby gym play mat, with all sorts of bright toys for the baby.
