prenatal vitamins are there for a reason. one of the key ingredients in it is folic acid, which an embryo needs for the proper closing of the neural tube. if it doesn't the baby can get hydrocephalus. the closing of the neural tube happens in the really early stages of the embryo, so early that the woman doesn't' even know she's pregnant at that stage.

Do take prenatal vitamins. Besides that get to a normal weight if not at present (overweight lose weight, very underweight gain some). Besides add good nutrition to your diet like fruit and vegetables. Also its a good idea to have a prenatal check up esp to see if you are anemic, lots of desi women are.

Eat badam and unda- DHA for baby brain development
Milk for calcium

Post natal- panjeeri!!! My Lactation consultant said every single desi mom she knew who ate that stuff had more milke than they knew what to do with it...and it's usually really creamy/high fat milk that helps your baby be a cute little chubster.

Procrastinating

i have never heard or suggested anyone to take anything specific pre-natally !! uptil 12 weeks preg. docs suggest for folic acid; calcium and iron thereafter.. panjeeri, etc tau baby kay aanay kay baad khaatay hain (as far as i know) ! and why wont anyone know about being preggy at early stage? i guess we are well-aware abt ourselves..and careful enough to know when we miss our periods...and preg. test strips are nothing difficult to get and be used ! so, folic acid tabs can be taken after the confirmation of pregnancy ..

Actually, by the time you miss your period, you are already about 15 days pregnant and the damage is done by lack of folicacid.

Absolutely, it depends upon our eating habits. Normally the folic acid required is greater than what people eat in a usual diet and even more than is found in routine multi vitamins. That said, people have babies all the time without going on pre natal pills before conception and the babies are fine. Its just a precautionary measure. Here is some information from teh March of Dimes website:
Take Folic Acid

What Is Folic Acid and Why Does Your Baby Need it?
Folic acid is a naturally occurring B vitamin that helps a baby's neural tube—the part of a developing baby that becomes the brain and spinal cord—develop properly. It must be taken before and during early pregnancy when the neural tube is developing.

The best way to get enough folic acid is to take a multivitamin with 400 micrograms of folic acid in it and eat a healthy diet. Most multivitamins have this amount, but check the label to be sure. You also can get folic acid in your diet, but it's hard to get enough every day through food alone. That's why the March of Dimes encourages all women of childbearing age to take a multivitamin containing folic acid every day as part of a healthy diet.

Folic acid works, but it only works if taken before and during the first few weeks of pregnancy, when the neural tube is developing into the brain and spinal cord. When the neural tube does not close properly, a baby is born with a very serious birth defect called a neural tube defect (NTD). About 3,000 pregnancies are affected by NTDs each year in the United States. If all women took adequate folic acid before conception and during pregnancy, up to 70 percent of NTDs could be prevented.
Folic acid has no known toxic level. If you ate a bowl of fully fortified cereal (400 micrograms), took a folic acid supplement (400 micrograms), and ate fortified foods and foods rich in folate, you would not get too much folic acid. Even in very high amounts, folic acid is non-toxic. Still, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that women consume no more than 1,000 micrograms of synthetic folic acid a day

Folic Acid in Foods
Folic acid is found in the following foods:

Fortified breakfast cereals such as Total and Product 19
Lentils
Asparagus
Spinach
Black beans
Peanuts (only if you do not have a peanut allergy)
Orange juice (from concentrate is best)
Enriched breads and pasta
Romaine lettuce
Broccoli
Folic Acid Is Good for Mom and Dad Too
In recent years, doctors have come to realize that folic acid is very important for everyone in maintaining health. It has long been known that folic acid plays an important role in the production of normal red blood cells. More recent studies suggest that folic acid may help prevent stroke, colon and breast cancer.

Your prenatal vitamins include great amounts of specific vitamins that are not provided by other vitamin tablets. If you tell your gynac that you are planning to conceive, they will get you on it immediately. The prenatal tablets consist of Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Thiamin, B6, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin E, Zinc, Copper, Panthothenic acid, Potassium, Vitamin A.

To have a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby, one should have a healthy body right from the start. Even when trying to conceive you would like to make sure that there aren't any deficiencies in your body that could affect your baby growth or development. Taking prenatal when you start planning to conceive is a smart idea and will fulfill any nutritional deficiency in your body.

Educated people in Pakistan do take these medicines. However, you don't have to get a prescrption for pre natal vitamins, you can just get the over the counter ones. If you want vegetarian ones, just go to Whole Foods (if you are US based). As regards what Pakistanis mostly (average) do before getting pregnant, they don't take any special diet etc simply because most have no idea about folic acid or any other thing. It all begins after one gets pregnant not before. Just avoid white fish and any fish with high mercury content like SwordFish, Tile fish and White Fish etc., No soft cheese, sushi or undercooked eggs (you are around 15 days pregnant before you miss your periods so you need to start before). Also avoid Iboprpofen and any medicine not indicated during pregnancy. Have a good diet full of vegetables and fruit and the pre natal vitamins and you should be good to go.
