I would go for a very rich and dark auburn. I think that would look beautiful.

also - considering my roots have come out and i let them grow in too much - i should get my hair done professionaly right?
Also wondering because i have grey hairs - i was thinking to get two tonesd or like highlights to blend it in when my roots grow ouyt
Also another thing...if i have gel in my hair - do i have to wash my hair before i dye it?

U can purchase a dark brown/black and cover all u're hair and cover the grey as well..then go to a salon and have it done professionally =)
When u get u're hair dyed, always go with clean hair. Any traces of oil, gel may prevent the dye from penetrating the hair.

NY $pender: is your hair color right for you?
i want to avoid the reddish undertones - i find after i dye my hair - it eventually turns orangey - i heard that using ASH browns, will prevent hat...- true?

p.s. try not to use conditioner in the hair when u wash it a day or two before u go for a color.. it seals the hair and the color doesnt penetrate.. just shampoo normally and absolutely no gels or oils too

I have the same dilemma.
I love Henna because it does not damage my hair, actually it makes it soft and shinny. The problem is, I have about 4 gray/white hairs, and Henna does not cover it. It does not even turn red. It just shines with silver lining - haha
So I have used the Loreal colors and it covers up great but then it dries up your hair badly...and you MUST keep up with the conditioner and color roots everytime which is time consuming.
I just think these American women are totally awesome in keeping up with their hair color routines. You never see them - "letting go" of themselves.
I used Henna last month. Now it's time to touch up... so I'm ottta here - soaking the henna...
laterz!

i used mehendi for a while.. the trick to get darker color is u soak it in tea / black tea.. the regular chai ka kehwa.. and beets water.... the water u get after boiling a few slices of beets.. this desi salon girl also added reetha powder which u can get from an indian grocery market.. sort of like a good conditoner i think...
so yea these ingridients make ur hair nice dark auburn rather than orangy red

Also if your hair if falling off a lot then mix egg and lemon juice in henna along with reetha ans sikakai (I think that's the right spelling) and leave it on your hair for 6 hours and then see and feel teh difference.

If u're going to use henna, make sure u know that a dye wud never be able to "tint" or color u're hair the same way it's supposed to. Untill and unless u're hair grows back again..
henna can be very drying, so avoid it if u have dry/brittle hair =)

Gina - I don't think henna is drying at all. Actually I would choose it over any other chemical dyes out there.
I love the texture of my hair after I put henna and conditioner.

Henna on it's own really dries out u're hair, when mixed with yoghurt/olive oil or an egg..it conditions the hair.
Black Henna is an absolute no no, it has all the bad chemicals and is very harmful.. use a good quality hair-dye instead of "black-henna" cuz there's no such thing as black henna.
