In the past 3 years, it's unbelievable how many girls (and a couple of guys) i know who have gone on holiday to Pakistan, and returned with a new nose. No medical reasoning, purely cosmetic.

They have nice noses before (slim, quite straight) and return with a small Barbie style upturned nose.


I myself, whilst at work in the Royal Forces, broke my nose. Whilst it didn't change my appearance on the outside, it affected my breathing severely, so i had to undergo an operation. Now it looks slimmer, and many aunties (whom i thought to be quite traditional in their views) congratulate me! When i tell them it was for medical reasons, they just wink and say 'ok' in a sarcastic manner.


Our neighbours (Iran and India) are not shy when it comes to cosmetic enhancement and every woman has an element of vanity to her, but is surgery for cosmetic reasons going too far? but what are your opinions and experiences? Do you approve of it, or have you had any enhancement?

I haven't myself but know quite a few Aunties in the community who have had nose jobs. I think cosmetic surgery can really help someone in need. One girl had quite a huge nose. Unfortunately people are very judgemental and she would not get risthas - she got a nose job and was married 2 years ago.

My cousin is a plastic surgeon and helps burned victoms, birth defects.

It's a personal choice - if you feel that getting plastic surgery will change your life and if it will you should. If not you shouldn't

The wierd thing is that my cousin tells me that it's 70% the husbands or the boyfriends idea usually for the women to get plastic surgery done!

Mirch - Not at all. The above was just examples of cosmetic surgery situations i have heards of that have been done in pakistan. I know of asian girls who have had boob jobs, liposculpture, face lifts etc in the uk. Now that you mention it, apart from nose jobs, what other common cosmetic surgeries are being performed in pakistan?

From the opinions i have heard, people think some types of CS is acceptable, and others not. Is it seen as acceptable over in Pakistan?

I know of of a women who got a breast reduction. That was about 15 years ago.

I also notice that the CS trend is more visible in the "doctor" crowd. (doc wifes, kids etc)

NJ - This is also true. You reminded me of a friend of friend who is a cosmetic surgeon and sees his wife as his 'masterpiece'. Once i was at a soirée and asked her why does she get all these surgeries and her reply was:

"i can get any surgery i want when i want. Some women have to save for years, and i feel really lucky that i don't have to. If Mark (her husband) thinks that i will look better by having x surgery, then what is the harm in that?"

She has such a vacant expression now. How can her husband think that is perfection?

i would not mind having my nose done. I have a just a weird shape nose I don't know if i would trust getting it done from pakistan.

Plastic surgeons are a different breed. If you take them the best looking person - they will find that one flaw to fix.

Some women and men get addicted to CS. It's a mind disease very much like "anoxeria and bulimia" where people perceive that they look a certain way and they don't.

Agree with the bit in bold, I come from a family of doctors (tho I'm not one myself) and they don't see cosmetic surgery (in moderation) as a big deal. I've had a couple of breast augmentations and imo as long as the woman/man is doing it for themselves and hasn't been pushed into it by husband/wife (or fiance!) or feels they need to do the procedure just to please others I don't think it's a big deal. I didn't tell my parents in advance that I was going for it but if it had been something more 'visible' and less personal like a nosejob I prob would have done.

I actually think within the next 10/15 yrs or so having cosmetic surgery is going to be seen as a totally minor thing as easy as changing ur hair colour, I mean it's already possible to have a 15min non-surgical "lunchtime" nosejob with no bandages or anything, u just walk into the doctor's surgery, have the injection and it's all done...

I hate my nose...but I think I would be scared to get it done. The only reason I got my nose pierced was because I wanted to put something there that would distract from the overall shape of it. As far as surgery...something about losing a part of me I was born with that Ill never be able to see again...makes me sad.

Of course, if there is an issue thats needing correction then its a different story.

You're a combination of your mom and dad and thats something to be proud of, no matter who you are. Remember when we were growing up, our parents use to look at us and say "iski ankein bilkul iski ammi pe gayi hein" or something funny like that? Well, a nose job means a part of you is gone...forever.

^^ i think if u look at it that way it is kind of sad but then everyone is different, me personally I never thought deeply about it. I guess if it was my nose the decision would have been harder as it's something that's always 'on show' and one of those things that can make u look entirely different and can't be easily reversed (unless it's non surgical with temporary filler) in the same way implants can just be taken out or blown up lips can shrink back to normal size in time.

OMG, PSquared, this similarity between us surprises me! WOW! Just like you, I'm not too fond of the shape of my nose. It's the one feature on my nose that I'd like to change. And i still find it amusing that I got my nose pierced.....cuz piercing your nose brings more attention to it. But I like nose studs, so i got it done anyways. I like the profile of nose better than the front of it....and think that the stud looks nicer from the profile. At times I've wondered about a nose job........BUT JUST LIKE YOU......I find the idea of "losing a part of myself that I was born with" to be disturbing and sad even. I think it would feel like i've lost a part of your identity or something.

Once I was shopping at TJ MAX, rummaging through the purses when this little old lady bumped into me from behind. She said somethign along the lines of "Oh I'm sorry." And when I turned around to look at her and tell her "it's okay", MY HEART FELL INTO STOMACH!!!!!!!!!!!! MY HEART WAS BEATING SO FAST......and it's a miracle that I didn't SCREAM! I was confronted by a peculiar looking old woman who only had HALF A NOSE. Not kidding, PSquared. Looking at the front of her face......she only had half of a nose. The other half was just a red gaping HOLE!!!!! It was as if somebody made a vertical lengthwise slice of her nose going straight down....and left only half of. I needed some air after that experience. And while I'm not crazy about my nose, I'm glad I have one.

^ Thats so sad and scary. Alhumdulillah, none of us have to worry about that.

RV I dont know anyone who is completely happy with their looks...everyone silently wishes they could do something differently...nicer hair, better teeth, smaller nose, bigger eyes, longer lashes, flatter tummy, etc etc etc. The list goes on.

A friend of mine has had her makeup tattooed onto her face. Thats how paranoid she is in front of her husband about her looks. Yup, she had her eyeliner and lipstick tattooed on permanently. I felt so sorry for her...we all look a bit pale without make up but what if you couldnt wake up to see you ever again? Ive got curly hair...I hated it growing up...learned about this thing you can do to permanently straighten your hair. I just cannot bring myself to do it because as much as I cant stand my impossibly moody hair...its my mom's hair and Im the only who got it. Everyone else in my family has bone straight hair.

We should be so happy to be us...

I wanted to get my nose done long way when it wasn't common. But my brother didn't let me do said you can die because of that so I didn't do that. At that time I didn't know that it's not good.

I'm not interested in permanent makeup tatooing, but I've always wondered if women who get it done miss the change that comes with makeup. I mean, let's say that you tattooed your lips a deep pinkish color.....do you ever miss not being able to change your lip color......or do you ever get so tired of the same lip color that you wish you could go natural? And if you get your eyeliner tattooed in black let's say, do you ever regret the fact that now you can't experiment with eyeliners of other colors? Sad and kinda creepy. Permanenet makeup seems so Stepford Wife-ish.

I wonder why these women do it? Are they that insecure that they looks hold number one priority over anything else, including personality? Were looks the only thing emphasised in their lives growing up. Or are looks the only reason their husbands married them? And that's all that he can praise her on, so she feels compelled to maintain that part of herself.

That permanent makeup isn't properly permanent like a tattoo unless u go back every few years for a touch up, not sure if that's cos they use a different type of tool or pigment or whether it just doesn't penetrate as deeply as regular tattooing. I think strictly speaking it's 'semi permanent.' Also, they can change lip or eyeliner colour cos they can just wear different coloured lipstick/gloss/eyeliner or whatever over it. I've always assumed women do it mostly just to save time and as a practical thing rather than please hubby, u know like just roll out of bed and ur makeup is already done lol one less thing to concentrate on. Does seem a bit creepy waking up already 'done' tho. I know this stuff is really big in Iran (like nose jobs and lip injections) where obviously only the face is meant to be 'exposed' in public.

I personally think I am too young for plastic surgery. I am not even too sure of getting peels or microdermabrasion yet.

I'll consider it in my late 40 or early 50s.

For right now - I'll settle with my trips to Sephora.
