Ummm. I am really not sure. When I was in Pakistan, we used to call Baig Saahab as Cockroach. When I came to the states, no one used the word Cockroach but the roach. One thing, I noticed that these are not those monsterous Cockroaches that we have back home. I think that is the difference between a Cockroach and a roach.

That, a Cockroach is that 2 inch long and 1 inch wide flying object often found under the sink of Kitchen, in dust-bin or near gutters in Pakistan. Roaches are found at the similar locations but are tiny in sizes. If I am recalling it correctly, I have not noticed any blood in roaches here. However, Cockroaches back home used to have a thick pasty white blood. Often reminded us the urdu muhaavra refering to someone's blood getting white (metaphorically as someone being emotionless!) ...

Cockroaches are, in that sense, a symbol of human-less, emotionless, rock-hearted character along with having the character of being found in filthy places.

Roaches on the other hand are found in filthy places but are not attributed to have any of the above characters. It's all about blood, I guess.

So, are those really the differences or is there any other major and significant difference between the two? Or is that that roach and cockroach are interchangable words? hmmm

Its all the same AQ. Americans are notorious for shortening any word possible - roach is short for cockroach. A disgusting bug no matter what you call it lol. The ones in the city are huge industrial size so we have them here too. yuck! Bugs FREAK me out.

      ok you ASKED for it.

I was a newly minted graduate with a job in NYC. Had to commute via Penn Station. One night the trains were all delayed and I was milling around waiting for a train. A movement caught my eye, I looked over and there was this BUG, big as a cadillac with hairy legs and red eyes (ok well red eyes is exaggerating but still). I walked over to it to see WTH it was, followed it around, I mean I had never seen or imagined a BUG could get THIS big. I noticed that some of the vendors in the area were laughing at me so I asked one of them "what IS that thing???" and was told its a cockroach. I almost fainted.

THEN flash 10 years ahead....I get my apartment in manhattan, settle in and now i'm an "uptown girl" all happy and proud of myself. Second night in my pretty new place this THING crawls out from under the kitchen sink and is whooshing thru my living room rug. Literally, this gross thing was big and heavy enough that when it moved its legs thru my thick (new) carpet, it made a WHOOSHing sound.

I was so freaked out that I called the super, threatened to move out and told him that this thing was so huge that it should belong to the ANIMAL kingdom not bug and how many can I expect and should i move out tonite. He came up right away and sealed off the pipes under my sink and guaranteed that it wouldnt happen again but I still have nightmares about these disgusting things/

After I got married, I moved into hubby's apartment which he too had recently moved into.

After settling in, one night, I went to the kitchen for something and saw an army of roaches creeping out from every possible direction.

I cannot describe that feeling...it was like there was a snake under my skin! We had the place fumigated several times, finally we left!

I think they should bomb that place.
Don't be hurtin' and hatin' cuz my phone is so cool!

man, some of you folks have wayyy too much free time.. maybe you guys should take a look at becoming linguists or something

but yeah, its the same thing..

a whole other topic is... the issue of "false friends".. two words that mean different things but sound alike (or are the same, as in the case of American and British English)... like a "lift".. in British terms, it means an elevator. In American terms, it means picking someone up and giving them a ride in your car.
