I heard the saying, "There's some truth behind every joke" for the first time today. And I thought it was interesting. I can see how it makes sense. For example, people may say something harsh to a person....something they've had on their mind for quite some time.....and then quickly say "just kidding." It's a sneaky way of putting someone down and then acquitting yourself.

I'm not talking about the knock-knock jokes or the "Why did the chicken cross the road?" variety.....but more about the teasing that takes place during social interactions. Another version of the saying is, "Many a truth is told in jest."

So what are your thoughts? Is there a grain/kernel of truth behind every joke?

So when people say that TLK acts shareef only because Niks is around ... they are joking but really not joking?

My father believed that if the world found out who I really was they'd reject me out of fear.

I agree . I think humor is a nice way of sugar coating the bitter pill of reality . No harm in it if other person do understand and fix himself .

Agreed - often times tanz is masked in humour, but contains bitter truths.

Oh so I AM a bejamalo then????

I didn't personally say that EVERY joke has some truth behind it. It was saying I heard for the first time today. Before that I didn't give much thought to it. Thought it was interesting and put it out there to see what others thought.

I don't think that EVERY joke has truth behind it....but I can see how many jokes might be true for the person making them. Some are just exaggerated and are not meant in earnest.

As far as calling you shareef only when Nikki is around....no in all sincerity TLK...I wasn't serious about that at all. I've read enough of your posts to know that you're a shareef person even in Nikki's absence. Hope you didn't take it to heart.

I don't see anything wrong with the thread. It's not offensive to anyone. I just put it out as food for thought.

I wonder if on some subconscious level we may realize that jokes can sometimes be a sugar coated bitter pill. And is that the reason that we sometimes have a hard time "taking a joke"???

Or when they're angry too. Although in a state of being angry and being drunk....you don't have much control over your emotions...so the "truth" will fly out.

But when you're calm...in your complete khaush o hawas...and joking...you ARE in greater control of your emotions.

I wonder if this idea of "truth behind every joke" is a possible reason why joking is not too very encouraged in Islam (I think I read that once...but not sure). Someone correct me if I've got it wrong.

^ basically many truths are told when people are supposedly joking with one another

I have to agree.....usually (not always) jokes usually have some underlying truth or subtle hint in them........and its usually hard for people to take jokes when they themselves realize there may be some truth to it.....

Many truths (sachaiyan) are told in jokes.

But it may not necessarily be a general truth. For example, if someone says "You're ugly" and says "just kidding"......how you interpret it could depend upon who made the joke. If a sibling says it....they may not mean it. IF someone you're not too close (acquaintance, coworker, etc) says it....you may doubt their intentions. And even if that person DID MEAN their joke....then the joke is a "truth" for them....not necessarily a general truth. That individual might think you're ugly, stupid, what have you. It's THEIR truth. Unless you've been getting similar comments from a great number of people.
