Peace and Salutations all
Ramadaan is a time when our bodies are subjected to a lot of stresses. In this time we should ensure that our digestive system is well lubricated or we may develop problems in the nether regions.
Good advice will include:
Plentiful supply of water
Plenty of fibre rich foods
Yoghurt and friendly bacteria drinks such as Lassi, Actimel and Yakult
Despite the urges go easy on the pakoras and samosas ...
Personally I think porridge is a very good sahoor dish together with some protein source such as steak. Reason being that porridge is a complex carb which digests slowly and it is very kind to the bowels because it has a nice fibre content.
Any other suggestions or refutations most welcome!
The Prophet(SAW) said:
"I am leaving you two things and you will never go astray as long as you cling to them -- they are the Book of Allah and my Sunnah." [Reported by Al- Haakim - Sahih].

salam....brother psyah! I give you much respect for opening up a thread that most people wouldnt have the courage to start.
foods rich in fiber (as mentioned above) is definitely something that needs to be added in one's diet especially during ramadan.
Aside from drinking plenty of water...eating fruits such as apples (with the skin ..most of the fiber and nutrients is in the skin), grapes etc will also help.
so be sure to eat plenty of fruit chaat

Haleem Protien + fiber + lots of yumminess - it can be too spicy though for the morning.
If a man hasn't discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live.

Yep, Haleem is perfect for sehri, as long you don't make it too spicy. it's a slow burning food, so it's ideal for fasting.

Stay away from Metamucil. It's supposed to help you go, but it only makes the stool solid while it is inside the body and makes it harder to expel from the body. It's actually not good for you at all.

I want to include a salad during iftaar. Trick will be to cut/chop or grate ingredients very small so it does not feel like you are eating too much. Also I want to include in the salad things like chopped apples raisins grapes avocadoes sweet corn etc whenever I can. Even if just a couple of spoons are taken a variety of raw veg (fibre) will be included in the meal effortlessly. If the ingredients are big then it "feels" like you are eating a salad...but with small size ingredients you can somehow get away with it.

Porridge is perfect...
High-fibre meals are good because they stay in your stomach longer!
i.e. veggies, fruits, nuts...porridge is a great idea...try not to binge on anything that is high in sugar and low in calorie (empty-calories)....gives you that yucky feeling!

And what about the traditional things of ramadan in Pakistan viz pakoras, samosas, jaleebies, pheni, khajla, paratha and all the oily stuff! The only purpose during ramadan they server is to add more fat on you! And some end up getting IBS!!!
These might have served their purpose in the old days when people had to exert a lot during the day to carry out their activities. But in todays era, they should be avoided specially by people over 30.

I think I'm going to try and avoid too much fried food this Ramadan, because not only is it unhealthy but I've also noticed it leaves me with this nasty bloaty feeling and I end up feeling sick and lazy. But good thread

For Complex Carbs check this:
Complex Carbohydrate Food - Foods High in Complex Carbohydrates - Sources of Complex Carbohydrate
For desi dishes I presume that things like makki roti and haleem are good, haleem especially so because of the meat content for protein and all the concoction of those lentils and pulses but be sure to reduce mirch level during Ramadan. Spices and masalas are nice but they too are bad for the gut.
Not long to go now for Ramadan ... start the live bacteria drinks from today ... one every evening. Also try to eat less than normal for the next day or so.

one is suppose to feel the hunger at some point during his/her fasting.. thats when u get the real swaab and thats is when u remember Allah the most.. keeping urself full for the whole day and searching for the foods to keep u fuller during fasting , well what exactly is the point of fasting then?
ps: its just one month, nothing worse can happen to you then losing a couple of pounds , which some of u are hoping to do..so its all good , peepzz!!

Peace MANIAC24, jazzysam and FrozenFire
Actually this thread is supposed to be a mechanism of making us do what is required anyway. It is like taking away the years of bad haibits that our societies have developed regarding food in Ramadaan and giving a rational reason to adopt the best way of eating and drinking. The fact is that people eat and feast more in Ramadaan but traditionally this was never the case.
The people today over eat and become heavy and tired for prayer but these foods digest slowly it does not mean that they will not feel hungry, besides there are less calories in these foods and they will get better health in general. Does not Islam encourage this?
The date ... what is the wisdom in eating them during Ramadaan? Because they give instant energy and are good on the digestive system. When we eat less our metabolisms work harder thus drying out our guts if we do not take care of our diets then we will put ourselves in difficulty. Allah (SWT) does not want us to be in excessive difficulty ... Being really hungry and not taking care of our body is wrong, but at the same time focussing on our bodies like a diet for Ramadaan is wrong too. We have one incentive to take care of our bodies so that we do not ruin our chances for a meaningful time of ibadah instead of taking time off resting or at the doctors due to upset systems.
