Have you guys Ever donated blood. How did you feel afterwards?
Only as high as I reach can I grow,Only as far as I seek can I go,Only as deep as I look can I see, Only as much as I dream can I be.

I fainted too!
But it's such a noble thing to do!

donated twice.. felt just normal. Little dry mouth , but it was good after drinking juice.
ps: reminded me of a joke lol...
there was once a very skinny guy who went to donate blood.
The doctor injects and start pulling out the blood. Doctors found out that he lost his senses.
The doctor then put two bottles of blood on him. After gaining sense.. he screamed " thats it?.. if you want more..go ahead "

First of all, yes, I've donated blood several times and felt fine afterwards. I am not scared of needles, in fact, I look at the needle when I am being poked and I watch the blood flow into the bottle There are always snacks, juices, and t-shirts to look forward to, and I have never worn any of those t-shirts
About the bone marrrow, I attended a 14-Aug concert earlier this month and parents of a 13-years old girl were there urging people to register and give sample of their DNA to see if they can help their daughter. My wife and I registered. They said that they will use the BLOOD and they will NOT use the traditional method (whatever that is) to get the marrow. As long as they take my blood, I am okay and that's why we registered. If my blood cells (attributes or whatever) match and I can save a life, I would be pleased.
...I know that which you do not know. (Quran - 1:30)...... Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?...(Quran - 55:13)...

Is it Project Vaney that you are talking about.
And its really good that you have donated blood.
I am also registered for the bone marrow..the likely of gtting a exact match is 1 in 41000 and for minorities like us, its really really slim.
It is an amazing way to try to help someone in their struggle for saving a life. I wish more Desi's would register to be a possible donor if there ever is a need.
National Marrow Donor Program
there are so many negative fears I would say about people registering esp us Muslims as most people think it will be too painful(not true that happens with the biopsy ones)
Also for Minorities they donot ask for the money that it takes to get it registered as there is such a need for minorities and they have enough funding for those.

Tariq its not that you have to donate donate at the moment. You have to match completely to be able to donate. Our ethnic background has to match along with other specific traits. For minorities like us there is such a shortage. Please take a moment to look at this website's faq's.Also for minorities they donot charge the amount as there is enough funding to cover the cost of them registering minorities like us

..I am just too happy if its a yes. The reason is I feel passionately about this cause as I have been in a pediatric oncology floor of a Children's hospital and I have seen Babies hooked up to machines. It was one of the hardest things I have ever seen. I have seen a close friend battle her 3 year old's cancer condition. I cannot imagine how it would feel if it was my child.
I try to put myself in their shoes and it is the hardest thing. Do you know there are nly couple of ways we can try to help others.
1 donating money(we dont really see the impact.
2.Donate blood
donate organs (only kidney at this moment if we are alive or most of them after we die
donate marrow and we meet the life that we may be able to meet. The patients that use your marrow literally takes on your blood type...they become a part of you..as the saying says blood is thicker then water.

No no I will do it inshallah .. I just need to take care of this advice from the website
Discuss your decision with your family or friends when you join the NMDP Registry. You may need their support if you are ever contacted as a match.
Its all part of understanding the committment.
Really, if we can save lives and live a healthier life ourselves, why not. It would be a very human thing to do

Ask To be honest, I don't remember the name of the project. All I remember is that the parents of that girl were really encouraging everyone to give their saliva samples to test for a match. As you said, the chances that someone's DNA will match are very rare, but there is that slight possibility. Also, as you said, with us minorities, it's even harder because not too many of us are registered and for marrow, not only does the blood has to match but the other characteristics of the blood and DNA have to match as well. The father of that girl was a pediatrician and the mother was a nurse.

I understand. The best thing is to ask your loved ones to join too. With so much shortage we should try to convince more muslims to join.

Not a silly question at all...Its donating the marrow in your bones IF you EVER Match with a person/child who needs it.Please note that they donot take the marrow out o everyone, its IF you Ever match. I met some people today that have been on the registry for 12 years and never matched.Thats the thing but it sure Definitely Saves a life of Human. You as a donor regenerate the marrow just like blood.
Here is a link. They also do International Registry.

Donating bone marrow is a long process where alot of things have to match.
Shikra bhai - this is how the donation is collected!
Bone marrow is collected under general anaesthetic from the cavities in the hipbones. Using a needle and syringe, punctures are made through the skin over each hip and the marrow is extracted from the pelvic bone cavity. This procedure can take up to two hours. In the month before the collection you may be asked to donate one or two units of blood.
The time needed for complete recovery varies, but generally you can go home the next day and resume your normal activities after two or three days. Normal bone marrow will re-grow rapidly to replace the donated bone marrow.
The risks for donating bone marrow are the same as those with any general anaesthetic. The chance of a serious complication is very low but some people may experience nausea and local pain for several days.

Hmmmm........thanks for the info Sunset Eyes, this is also how I thought bone marrow is extracted and that's exactly why I was not willing to do it. However, the girls' parents (father is a doctor and mother is a nurse) assured me that this traditional method will NOT be used. Allah I will have to do is simply donate blood and they will take certain type of cells out of the blood. Bone marrow directly from the bones will not be needed. That's what they told me and that's why I agreed because they can take as much as blood as they want, but poking needles in my bones?
Aagey Allah jaaney.

Also they made me go eat lunch before since it was my first time...The only thing was during my time...two dudes gave their blood and woh bhi full full bottles..or mere ki small baby size pouch
