How can I tell my friend she has smelly breath? I'm pretty sure she brushes her teeth coz she seems like a hygienic person. Any ideas what could be causing this? ( maybe she doesn't brush her teeth )

Maybe its her diet ?
Ask her what kinda foods she has as some have a more stronger odour than others !

You could probably suggest mints or breath fresheners to her

Bad Breath is actually a wonderful way for a person to realize he/she has gum disease. She should take a trip to the dentist and she'll be advised to get periodontal treatment. I dont know much about the procedure, but they try to clean the teath using a procedure called root scaling and planing by which they clean the teeth below the gumlines and hope for the gums to grow and fill out the pockets. I dont think its a painful procedure from what I've read on the internet, very similar to your bi annual dentist cleanups, just a little more exhaustive. I hope she realizes this early enough or otherwise she'll lose her teeth early in life even if she has no cavities.

yes , MKD , bad breath does indicate a couple of other things as well ... if its chronic , it indicates liver problems ... stomach problems .. it could be anything ... so one shouldnt wait until things get out of hand ... tell her politely and advise her to get it checked ... you are friend , I am sure she wont mind it .,.. after all thats what friends are for

Hmm........this is one of those risky topics. Here's an idea. The next time you are with your friend.....and if you notice that she has bad breath yet again.......offer her some gum. And don't take any for yourself. If she asks, "Why does my break stink?" Tell her, "I just thought you'd like some gum. It's one of my favorites. It tastes good, it freshens breath, and it's just fun to eat." (If you provide several reasons for why you like this gum......it won't seem like it's all about the breath). DON'T take any gum for yourself. And if your friend asks, "Aren't you going to eat some gum?" Tell her, "I already a stick a while ago, I'll have it later." (maintain a positive friendly attitude throughout ur time with her)

This will get your friend wondering about her breath. She'll wonder if you simply meant to share the gum or if you were trying to tell her that her breath smells. And next time, she'll hopefully try to be more careful about her breath. If it is STILL bad the next time...........repeat the above procedure. Perhaps repeating it the second time....could wake her up.

^ I don't know if this strategy will work. But you can play it out in your head to see if it would before trying it out.

*******Much of bad breath is caused by bacteria on the tongue rather than the teeth. This is why it's important to brush your tongue as well. The next time you're talking to your friend....and tell her you went shopping. Tell her some of the things you bought. And then casually mention, "You know I heard on the radio the other day that bad breath can be caused by more by bacteria on the tongue n that we're supposed to brush our tongue as well and rinse with listerine. And ever since I found that out.....I make sure I brush my tongue as well especially before meeting people. And I bought this cool tongue scraper from Walmart...which helps. Your whole mouth feels much fresher." There's nothing wrong with this strategy because friends.......especially girls.......share beauty/fashion/hygeine tips with one another all the time. And it can be shared in a broad and general way so she doesn't get offended.

Her diet can also play a role. Onion and garlic and spicy foods contain compounds such as sulphur that enter our bloodstreams and our body tries to get rid of the compounds through our breathing and skin. In other words.....if you eat a lot of onion/garlic....you can smell it on the person's breath and even on their skin. This is because your body is trying to get rid of those compounds through your pores and mouth. While listerine and gum will temporarily mask these odors......you have to wait for your body to get rid of it completely.

It could even be a case of halitosis. Which can be corrected by her dentist. Best wishes.

people who don't eat regular meals/skip meals or eat very little also tend to get bad breath... i've noticed this quite a bit and that could be one reason
