Bipolar disorder by definition is both mania and depression but conventionally only one event of mania is enough for the diagnosis.
Mania is fast acting mind or racing mind and person acts unusual as example the person buys things a lot/spends money, borrows money from different sources, talks fast and too much, sleeps less, hyper active, eats less, engages in sexual activities a lot and eventually gets exhausted and sleeps for hours or days.
Some drugs may make the person do that also especially too many diet pills or those having nasal decongestants.
Treatment is by medicine is quite satisfactory but it comes back if medicines are stopped.
Lithium is a good medicine also for bipolar disorder.
Sometimes treating or over treating depression with medicines makes the person go in to mania if there is bipolar disorder.
Simply speaking:
Mania= fast
Depression= slow
Bipolar= Mania alone or both mania and depression periodically.
