Sister, mom, nani, par-nani. Dad, two brothers. It's coming, i know.
There's got to be something i can do to keep it at bay for as long as possible. I've done everything possible to eliminate all sorts of sugars from my life. In the last 4 years i have made these changes
- Reduced soda consumption to less than a can a month.
- Eliminated chocolates and other temptations to less than a serving a month.
- Reduced sugar in chai and coffee from 2 and half chamchay to ZERO.
- Introduced considerable intake of uncooked green vegetables known to help fight diabetes.
- Introduced myself to 30 minutes of exercise, atleast four times a week.
This thread if for you to post your experiences with tried and tested methods. Google has great answers but i want to see what desis are doing about it.
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

Prepare yourself for a desi carbless diet (or goods carbs) - avoid chwal, roti and parathas instead switch to brown rice and whole wheat atta
Daals, other lentils and chicken is recomended
Exercise and medicine likes gluphophage, metformin and glumetza also help before you have to be dependent on insulin
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Besides embracing the inevitable, eating antioxidant-full fruits, maintaining low body weight, since obesity is the primary reason for the Type II to occur in the family. Luckily I dont have a giant sweet tooth, so when I needs to eat it, I eat it.

A real desi solution:
Introduce a bitter "karwa" taste product in your diet. Karela (bitter gourd) if you can take it, or fenugreek (methi) which is more palatable. Here is an idea how to take fenugreek:
Wash the fenugreek seeds and soak them for 24 hours. Rinse them and leave them covered in a bowl for 2 days to sprout. They will stay in the fridge couple of days once sprouted. Take one teaspoon of sprouted fenugreek seeds every morning. They taste less bitter when sprouted.
