Its quite easy, here is how I make it.
Take channey ki daal according to your need. Boil the daal in lots of milk and add some ilachi for taste, boil till, the daal is fully soft and cooked, the milk should dry out. Let it cool down a bit then grind the mixture in a chopper.
Now take a pan/pot and put oil/ghee/butter in it, add the daal mixture in the oil and cook and stir till the daal changes colour from yellow to somewhat brownish. In the end add sugar and some more ilachi, cook a while and you're finish.
For decoration, spread the halwa in a flat tray, put into the fridge, when its cold, the halwa becomes hard, its best to eat then, cut small pieces with a knife and serve.

yeah the heating of the paste was a torture but it was all worth it
i added lesser ghee for obvious reasons
heres the pic... my house mates loved it... we had it very hot with vanilla icecream...

Diva4U, for 1 cup of daal, you can use 3-4 cups of milk, just add more, if needed, when boiling the daal in the milk, you will know that the daal is done, when you can crush a piece of daal in your fingers. Just let the milk dry out, careful at the end, use low heat, so that it doesnt stick in the pot, you might have to stir from time to time.
Daagh, I must say, yours turned out real good, the picture is not bad also, yes the halwa is real tasty, but its hot too, so its not recommended to eat lots of it at one time, good thing is that the halwa can stay in your fridge as you can eat is when its cold also, so you can actually enjoy it over a longer period. I like it more when its cold, you can spread the halwa in a thin layer on a tray, when hot and let it get cold in the fridge then cut square pieces like burfi.
hmm with vanilla ice option sounds yummy too.
Once again, you are a good cook, as you are quick in your cooking. I enjoy your food pictures.

I tried the halwa today and it turned out pretty good. However, while cooking it, some of it did stick to the pan. So, be careful while making it. Also, while bhoonofying it with the ghee, I noticed that the halwa was sticking to itself and around the cooking spoon. Floating around like dough more like it. Hope that's what its supposed to be like. The result at the end was great...tastes and looks exactly like the halwa I have always eaten ! Thanks Sadiyah.
Daagh :- eating the halwa with the ice cream...hmmm...combo sounds yummy but be careful, those are tons of calories you may want to stay away from. Very heavy !!

Is is necessary to put milk in it? Won't it make it whiter?
Can we boil it in water? I was looking up the recipe somewhere else and they boiled the channas in water and when they were ready to bhoon it, they added powdered milk. Any one tried that?
