Ok, I have a dilemma... our living room walls are pale, pale, pale, ice blue (Shaded Ice from Color Your World) - Basically white, with a tint of pale blue. Our accent wall, behind the sofa, is this gorgeous rich, rust/red (Iron Ore Red from Benjamin Moore- trés fab! Check it out!). The sofa's are chocolate brown with an espresso wood trim. The rest of the furniture is the same dark brown, espresso colour. The curtains are chocolate brown. The trim and baseboards are white. The floor is standard, hideous parquet (yay for rental apartments!) with orange undertones that I want to neutralise.

So what colour rug would look best? Will tan look washed out? Will chocolate brown be too overwhelming? Should it be patterned or plain?

Second question: right now, both the thee-seater and single sofa are against the rust wall. The single seater is slightly angled inward, towards the three seater. The plan is to get a matching ottoman and place it in front of the single seater to make a cozier sitting space. So should both sofas be on the rug, or only the three-seater?

If you get the Pakistani/Persian style rugs, you can put almost any color combo there and it will work. I didn't believe my parents when they told me, but I've had two different ones in our living room, and both have surprisingly matched and really brought out different aspects of the colors.

Our living room has very very pale beige/green walls, with an accent red as well. The furniture is creams, browns, and reds, and some orange. The first had a cream, coral, blue, turquise, and maroon design. The second has maroon, red, orange, and brown. Both have looked great.

Not at all, but our furniture is fairly plain, except for two accent chairs with stripes. I'll see if I can find photos.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

If the ornate work isn't your style, then I'd say go with a bold color that brings them together nicely -- a red shade, I think. Or maybe even a brilliant blue.

Sehar lovely pics.

SGC when I was decoarting my place, I was told by someone that the color of the rug is based on the Sofa and the cushions on it.

So if you have a chocolate colored sofa and cream cushions, the rug should be cream with a hint of chocolate in it.

I have a dark chocolate suede sofa with stripe chocloate/cream/white cushions.

My rug is cream with a hint of chooclate in it.

sahar...your living room is done.

I agree with sahar.....go with something multi colored...that has a little bit of all your colors. it wont look too busy unless you have way too many patterns and colors already going on.

we have plain dark..jungle green sofas..and our rug is multi colored..with maroon..and green..and blue..and white..but our center table..and side tables is..i dont know how to explain..its multi colored tiles all put together to form tables..and it all seems to work out..as long as ur not thinkin abt buyin a solid color rug i think you can pretty much get any sorta rug with whtever design and it will look alrite.

Sahar..ur living room has this 'warm' feel to it..and i like it..

We also have dark furniture in our living room and i thought a darker rug would complicate the color scheme further but Sahar, your living room pulls it off really well.

SGC, we have a beige colored rug to cover the grayish carpet and i feel it works well for us. Here are a couple of pics although i am afraid they came out a bit wierd since we get alot of light thanks to the huge windows.

Here is the carpet:

Lovely living rooms u guys have Sahar and Ira.

That sounds good SGC. As long as the print isn't too busy and loud you should be fine with a printed rug.

you know, i was talking with the hubs, and he thinks our room is so contemporary and clean that a patterned, elaborate rug will look out of place- even though i love those. and after thinking about it, i'm inclined to agree because we have a lot of straight lines and color blocking in place... i was thinking something in tan with a tone on tone, larger pattern... not floral and not geometric but maybe something in between. like a large damask print, but ivory on tan, or tan with medium brown or something.

you guys in the US are SO lucky to have west elm! i love that store!

This is our living room, the furniture is a light brown, the color of the magazine rack so I contrasted it with chocolate sofa and huge chocolate floor cushions.
My feature wall is also a light brown so the rug has hints of chocolate with lots of brown

Its still in the process of getting furnished

Im against a coffee table but lately ive seen people opting out a coffee table and getting huge ottomons for the center. I might do that.

this is the rug we love/want....

anyone in the states wanna pick up the 8x10 for us and ship it? lol
we'll compensate!

this would work cos the cinnabar color picks up the rust wall...

and this would work too cos of the pale blue and chocolate brown...
