Whenever my mom is frying tarka for the daal or whenever she heats up zeera or mirch, everyone in our house just cannot stop coughing. My room is upstairs but even then it's so bad. Any advices besides drinking water?

Tarka is not over cooking of food.... My mom never adds lal mirch in tarka therefore we never had this problem. Basically it is lal mirch that cause coughing.
May Allah bring peace in Pakistan. Ameen

The kind of tarka she is talking about would make anybody cough. Try frying ground chili in very hot oil.
There are many kinds of tarka's we avoid to do the kind of Tarka she is talking about due to the same reason.

if you keep the oil at a medium temp instead of high i think it shoudn't be as bad. I dont; rememebr what we do. If im not mistaken we add the spices to the daal while cooking it and tarka is only of oil, ginger and garlic or oil and garlic, plus green chillies. or if we r using dried red pepper that we add to the oil too. no powder mirch and haldi and stuff.

How is daal suppose to come out all tasty if you don't cough over it? Think about it... it happens for a reason.

you poor child lol
tell your mum not to put the oil on high heat and over fry the stuff she is putting in the tarka. I do tarka with just zeera, onions and garlic and it doesn't smell bad at all.

No it is not an unique issue , it happens all the time. I open all the windows even in winter time before my wife does that kind of tarka.

It doesn't have to do with being white washed or whatever. A question just poped in her mind and decided to ask if there is any alternative besides drinking water that helps calm down the smell of frying red pepper. If you have ever fried dried red pepper or roasted them, you'd know the smell is very strong and it will give some irritation no matter how long you have been cooking it, smelling it, or whatever.
