I just bought a new house... House was without an owner for 1-2 months and there's some weed on the grass. I have tried everything, from spraying weed killers, to using weed hounds, and in frustration picking the damn weeds out with my bare hands! Nothing works, though its not a lot but I want a clean yard with absolutely no weeds! Suggest alternatives please. And I have no clue what type of weed it is, its the one which looks like little tiny ferns.

Second star to the right and straight on till morning

If is that big , then the only solution is to pick it out with hands.
The other alternative is to wait for cold weather , it will die and to make sure you get no weed next spring , do a pre emerge weed treatment of your lawn before spring season.
Remember it is next to impossible to have a 100 percent weed free lawn, , it is a on going battle, even after that treatment you have to be vigilant and keep on uprooting them as you see their tiny heads emerging out of your grass.

I am a man with a plan. A plan to live a simple , fulfilling life.

Mine too was weed free till the water restrictions almost killed it. My lawn was envy of my neighbors. I am starting a new for the next spring. I know everything there is to know about lawn care. My secret as I said was , pre emerge treatment and then every evening pulling the weed which would still manage to grow. Once it gets out of control you have to wait for the winter when it dies. Some dheet weed might not so again you have to pull it out using your hands, remember make sure you wear some kind of garden gloves , you might get bit by some bug or you might be allergic to some kind of weed. My first year of pulling the weed bare hands give me very severe allergic reaction . I had to get steroids shot and treatment.

One more thing grass is always greener on the other side of fence. When I bought this house , the lawn had bare patches, and the lawn of my neighbor used to look so gorgeous from my lawn. Then once I walked over to his lawn and I found that his lawn had bigger bare patches then mine. So your neighbors lawn might look like weed free but if you go close enough you might find weed there. Or he is following the same formula I do and many others do.
The university in your area might have some kind of specific information for lawn care at their website try that too. I learned everything from website of local university.

I use that too , the one they sell will start to break your back because you have to sit or bend to pull the weed out so I invented my own in which case I do not have to bend or sit on the ground. I broke the wooden handle off of it and bought a long handle from Home depot and put the metal part in that handle. Now I do not have to bend or sit on the ground to pull the weed out.
Good luck and happy landscaping. It is fun and great stress reliever.

If you want to start fresh, you can burn the whole yard...make sure that you control the fire, not very hard to do. Wait till its just about died off for winter. Rake the dead leaves off and then set it on fire, keep a metal rake handy to control where the flames go. This kills off all the seedlings of the weeds that would have re-grown come spring. Once the entire yard is burned off, you have to re-seed and fertilize then wait for spring and weeds should be gone or nearly gone. A big job for sure but may be worth it if there are too many weeds to get them all by hand.

A great topic for a separate thread...but since we're talking about "weed" and "grass" anyway maybe its not COMPLETELY off-topic but....heck here goes. In pak, I saw fields of marijuana growing wild...big buds and all. All OVER the place. Goats were actually grazing on it. I visited a private boys school and they had a field out in the back, forbidden to the boys but it was just rife with healthy marijuana plants to the point that if you went anywhere near it, you could get high just by breathing. And people just ignored it. Why is that?

Mirch, yes that was pretty evident from what I saw. But the confusing thing was that people just ignored it....like it was any old weed. I know that Pak has its share of drug users etc but this one, they just .... ignore?

LOL , it is like this , you will see a group of young teenagers , some will be smoking cigarettes but others in the same group choose to ignore it and do not smoke at all. I guess same applies here. People just ignore these plants as weed and pay no attention to the existence of these plants. The plants are invisible to them.

This is unusual ^ no one mentioned 'Weed Killer' spray treatment.
It works like magic and, the great thing is that it won't harm any other plants or grass as much. Within two seasons you may showoff your patch to your neighbour with snooty pride. lol

Sleepy

first things first. hire professional weed killers, they spray the stuff. you can't use the grass clippings though for example to feed your plants later on, cuz the stuff is really poisonous and can seep into the plants and so you can't eat em (if you're growing veggies for example). do this early spring. the whole year you might have a few weeds, but those can be controlled by just pulling them out from the roots. (some are easily pulled out, stuff like dandelions are terrible.)

then that fall, before frost, put on some fertilizer for the grass. the healthier your grass, the less weed you will have. let it sit there throughout the winter. the next spring, sprinkle in some healthy grass seed, mixed in with fertilizer/soil for it, and water it as many times the bag of the seeds says on it. that should keep the weed away. for little things, again, get a spray bottle or use manual labor. nothing works better than manual labor for weeds actually. but key is to have healthy grass.

^ Thanks! Im gonna call the 'weed' man!

Mama, i dont think i can burn it! its a huge yard and I have never done this and I dont think its that bad... Neighbors might not like it either.

If I had like a weekend and a weed hound, I can pull it all off, but I can be a lazy bum at times!
